¡Que Viva! was a pleasure to prepare and the good kind of medicine.

Building food altars, meditating on the life of nourishing plants and alchemizing this spiritual practice into a tangible offering is the ‘mágica’ y’all get to taste ✨

Thanks to all who received , left offerings (the café from my ancestral home, Utuado) and partook.

The video you can’t hear at the end is telling folks to take all the produce… at communal altar- no one goes hungry, and the ancestors were well fed! Que viva!

“¡Que Viva Puerto Rico!” is a cry of celebration and an invocation of memory, a living echo of Borikén’s ancestors who endured enslavement, resisted colonial domination, and cultivated survival through culture. The foods that continue to nourish Puerto Rican identity—arroz con gandules, mofongo, and sofrito-carry within them the intertwined legacies of Taíno, African, and Spanish traditions. To prepare and to share these dishes is to enact a form of cultural resistance, affirming that despite centuries of displacement and attempted erasure, Puerto Rican life, flavor, and spirit endure.
In this spirit, a food altar named Que Viva will be created as a communal offering, paying homage to those shared ancestors who resisted colonialism in Puerto Rico (Boriken), transforming sustenance into a sacred language of remembrance, resilience, and community.

Landed in San Diego 1/5/26 - interviewed on a farm 1/29/26 and thanks to persistence, my mentor, and the folx @foodshed.coop - I am officially a farmer.

Gratitude for loving support, time and softness. I ventured to nu land and in no time, spread my roots. 👨🏻‍🤝‍👨🏾🐕‍🦺🏡🌱📈

ALWAYS believe in your highest timeline. Here I mentor youth, gave parents a two week summer reprieve as a camp lead, welcomed Navy folx whose connection to land is often severed, communed with the unhoused as I walked to and from the trolley… prayed often as I processed my life this far, all the pain and all the pleasure….. composting. Rambling, dancing, GROWING!

💫 As we get ready for our 15th Anniversary Celebration, meet Chef Justin of J. Infuse Cuisine! @j.infuse

Chef's Statement:

I'm a Chef and Spiritualist who weaves together the worlds of food energetics, culture, and connection. For over twelve years, I've cultivated my culinary practice around the art of communal "home•cooking" - meals that expand our sense of self, our stories, the land, and one another. To me, a good meal does more than fill an aching belly; it eases a groaning mind, ignites the soul, and electrifies the body for artful creation. My food is a conversation with the past, a prayer for the present, and an offering to what's yet to come.- and often inspired by own Scotch and Boricua ancestry.

The Altar:

The communal altar displays a family style variety of home style dishes, seasonal salads, an abundant vegetable harvest, and warm proteins. Each dish is uplifted by items specifically recycled from local artists as well as elements foraged directly from the natural world. Centering our shared ancestral connection to food and dining, the altar acts as a meeting place for the age old ingredients that fueled artists and innovators of past to those in the room.
