REPURPOSING DISCARDED FESTIVAL TENTS INTO…quilted vests! For those of you that are new round here, J.O.STUDIO is a sustainable brand that salvages tents that are discarded at music festivals every summer (in fact, in the UK, over 250,000) tents are left behind - the majority of these get sent to landfill. I then take them back to my studio, wash and dry them and then rework them into unisex garments…like these awesome quilted gilets! They are made in #manchester and I’ve even managed to repurpose the guy ropes into gorgeous knotted fastenings! What do you think? AND I DIDN’T THINK IT COULD GET ANY WORSE (we are absolutely f*cked- festival edition) I went to another festival salvage yesterday and although I felt ready, nothing could prepare me for the state of the site…Over 70,000 people went to this particular festival at the weekend and by the looks of it everyone left their campsites A STATE. There was practically no one that had taken their tents, the majority of people had left them along with their sleeping bags, airbeds, clothes and all their rubbish! It seems to be acceptable now to treat your campsite like an actual DUMP, litter and leave all your waste behind (as well as shitting in your tent? What is that about guys???) There was around 100 volunteers given a few hours to salvage one of the campsite but DO NOT think for one second that things left behind in festival fields end up being repurposed or reused! At the end of the Monday evening the festival organisers just bulldoze the whole site and everything gets sent to landfill! I’m really struggling to comprehend how we got to this point or even how it seems to be acceptable to show this little regard for somewhere? I see so many festivals paying lip service to ‘sustainability’ but it actually feels like in reality the system is SO BROKEN. Anyone have any ideas how we can stop this happening? If you’ve been to a certain music festival this weekend (cough cough #glastonbury) you might have wondered what happens to all the tents that get left behind? Unfortunately most tents from UK Festivals get bulldozed and sent to landfill- approximately 250,000 each year! (According to the association of independent festivals). I work trying to save as many of those as I can and reworking them to make unique handmade pieces in my studio, but that is such a small fraction of the overall waste left behind. What can you actually do with your fabric scraps? 👀This is a question that has plagued me for as long as I can sew! As a sustainable brand owner I am literally incapable of throwing anything away! 🤭 So, I thought I’d share how the team and I creatively repurpose scraps that are too small to use for anything else. MY FIRST EVER TENT UPCYCLING WORKSHOP! 🏕️When I was invited by my pals at @we_are_exiled to bring J.O.STUDIO down to London fashion week, I was absolutely BUZZING to try out a brand new workshop! We made it as accessible as possible for those who had never sewn, by prepping all the bags beforehand it meant that everyone could join in personalising their very own crossbody bag made from upcycled materials! ♻️ Everyone could customise their piece using my collection of salvaged trims, secondhand beads, and appliqué using reclaimed car leather from @myrefactory ! ⭐️ I LOVED meeting everyone and helping them put their own awesome creative spin on J.O.STUDIO products!
