I get excited about a lot of things. I like round dogs, enormous amounts of food, handmade objects, new cities, metal birds.

I’m especially especially excited about this thing. this past July, I spent a beautiful couple of weeks at @hambidgecenter making a series of recordings that eventually became this album, with the help of the incredible skills of @jenn.nulsen. this is my first record and I’ve learned a ton about myself and my own work through this process. it would mean a lot to me if you took a listen - link in bioooooo to pre-order, pre-save, preserve, preview?

sound shadows are everywhere. magnified by the acoustic resonators of concert bass drums in conjunction with electronic amplification, objects sing and shiver, awakened by a sonic environment both volatile and sympathetic.

these pieces embody the lack of control we have over our environment, the treasuring of physical objects and the stories they tell, the pleasures of hearing a secret sound, and the connection between us and everything we use to move through the world. for the percussionist, the stick is a conduit to sound...but so is the scrubbing brush, the pottery shard, the wrench.

our objects inform others and ourselves about who we are. often we keep them as reminders of places we’ve been or people we’ve been, talismans of those who have come before us for those who will come after us. why are we struck by certain objects, and at what point do our collections consume us? wandering through antique stores, certain things call out our names, some cry out louder than others. in many ways, these are fragments of our own identity reaching out to us. I dress, I collect, I hoard, I acquire because otherwise, how would I know who I am?

Discover the remarkable acoustics of a historic Corbetta magazine tomorrow, Wednesday, July 29 at 7:00 p.m at bunker 28 in Enterprise South Nature Park.

music for resonant spaces is a unique, site-specific performance by @stove_works Artist-in-Residence @j.tsang

Jess Tsang is a percussionist, researcher, and improviser whose work explores the intersection of sound, objects, and space.

Inspired by the remarkable acoustics of the bunkers, Tsang transforms the concrete structure into part of the instrument itself, creating an immersive performance for bass drum, feedback, and found objects that can only be experienced in this one-of-a-kind setting.

Bring a chair or blanket if you’d like to sit inside the bunker, or feel free to wander through the space as you listen. Parking is available at the Wildwood Playscape. From there, follow the short walk to the bunker 28 performance site. The performance will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. to ensure everyone can exit the park before closing.

We hope you’ll attend this extraordinary performance.

Next Wednesday, July 29, Inspired by the incredible acoustic properties of the Enterprise South Nature Park bunkers, percussionist Artist-in-Residence Jess Tsang presents “music for resonant spaces”, a site-specific live performance for bass drum, feedback, and objects, utilizing the natural resonance of the concrete structure as its own instrument.

Please feel free to bring a chair or blanket/towel if you’d like to sit inside the bunker to experience the performance. You are welcome to walk around or stand in the space, but there are no seats available in the bunker.

This performance will be recorded and will start promptly at 7pm to ensure that everyone departs prior to the park’s closure at 9pm.

Note that as per park rules, alcoholic beverages or intoxicants of any kind are prohibited.

Jess Tsang is a percussionist, researcher, and improviser dedicated to the creation of new interdisciplinary works. Her sonic practice utilizes bass drums as conduits for tactile feedback loops and acoustic amplifiers for found objects. With a foundation in classical percussion technique, Jess draws inspiration from material culture studies and Foley artists to examine how objects shape our lives, and how that might be translated into music. She released sound shadows, her debut album for amplified bass drum, feedback, and objects, in 2021, and has presented her lecture recital on the intersection of found objects and percussion music at Harvard University.

The 10th song on my new kids’ album is this great Cantonese children’s song called the Big Watermelon, about a kid who eats a watermelon seed and then wonders if a watermelon will grow out of their head. I learned the song from my friend @snailbeit , who also taught me the Cantonese song Tum Tum Chuen from my first album (also sung by the fabulous Vicky Chow!). I love the silliness, simplicity and relatability of this story – to me, a reminder to always embrace whimsy, wonder and curiosity, even in the hardest of times. Also, what a large, all-star cast of musician friends on this song, and this super cute artwork & animation by my dear friend @j.tsang ! Very grateful for these badass friends.

hello, at last (goodbye – for now...!): first encounters and long awaited returns

short notice for today's show, long notice for all the rest! hello at last is back for the final days of @_archestratus_ , every Thursday at 7pm for this entire month.

this saturday (3/21)! come to @barbesbrooklyn to hear dogsbody, your favorite band you’ve never heard.

@annameadors @amygdrums @niconeeek @lizplinks (and yours truly!) will blow your face off and then put it back on nicely. one day we’ll play a show with eleonore but saturday isn’t that day.

thank you to @emoonpark for curating a lovely set of early saturday shows all month! and massive thank you to @avalochfarmmusicinstitute for time to sit with these ideas and create. yesterday we hiked up some ice for a while and then tried to make the nicest sounds we could. by @j.tsang

we made a show!! thank you so much to @officialpuppetbusiness for trusting @highatmissphere , @bear_in_a_barn_nyc and yours truly with the score for Parched. it feels like a real gift to work on something so deeply original (and visually stunning, to boot!)

your annual babka party recap for 2025, year 5 (!!!) of the create-your-own reality holiday. this year we were down two of the OG babkamasters @amygdrums and @niconeeek, but boy oh boy did folks step up to the proverbial and literal plate.
