Becoming Yourself Without Losing Who You Are | With J Winkelried

What changes when you become more fully yourself, and what stays the same?

J and I have known each other since we were kids, which made this one of the most personal conversations I’ve had on the podcast. We talk about transition, love, family, marriage, belonging, and what it means to hold multiple identities without letting any one of them define you.

Becoming more yourself doesn’t mean erasing who you were. ❤️

There’s so much about transition you only learn by living it.

Ten years ago today I took my first testosterone shot.

A decade.

People often celebrate transition with before-and-after photos, but the truth is there isn’t one version of me that disappeared and another that arrived. Every photo here is me. Some are harder to look at than others, but they all belong to my story.

I’m trans and nonbinary. You don’t always get to control what hormones change, or what they don’t. I lost my hair before I wanted to. I gained a lot of weight, then lost it. I went through some truly ugly duckling phases. There were years when I did almost anything I could just to feel numb.

My tattoos became one of the most affirming ways I could reclaim my body. So did choosing when I have body and facial hair, what clothes I wear, what watch is on my wrist, what jewelry I put on, or whether I paint my nails. Those choices may seem small to someone else, but they’ve helped me become myself.

There are still days I take off jewelry or nail polish before leaving the house because I don’t want to draw attention to myself or make myself less safe.

People love to say this is a choice.

For me, it wasn’t.

It was life-saving.

I’ve experienced gender-based harassment and assault. Every time I walk out my front door, I know most people don’t see me the way I see myself. And yet, if I had to do it all over again, I would.

To my parents, my siblings, my partner, my closest friends, and everyone who stayed… thank you. Your love carried me through moments I wasn’t sure I’d survive.

To the people who walked away… Jane didn’t disappear. She lives inside me every day, just beneath the surface. She carried me long enough to become the person writing this today.

I’m endlessly grateful for Bruce, my service dog, whose love and support have helped me heal in ways words never could.

If a young trans or nonbinary person somehow finds this… keep going.

Nothing about this journey is linear.

We’re here because LGBTQIA+ people before us survived. We’ll survive too, so the next generation can.

Here’s to ten years. ❤️🏳️‍⚧️

To everyone who stood beside me… I love you.

And to everyone else… kindly fuck off. by @j.winkelried
