Frames from a two-channel installation in Morris Lum’s latest exhibition, Interior Chinatown 林耀基在華埠. Thanks @_morrislum_ for bringing me in to help shoot and edit this piece, and to Wayland Li Wushu School in Markham for letting us hang out and observe their training before the World Junior Wushu Championships!

I’m excited to be presenting a new bass + visuals performance, HOW TO MOVE A BRIDGE at the @canadiancentreforarchitecture on Saturday, February 28. Thanks to @zhou_xin for sharing his research archive of Chinese “science and education” film reels, which I’ve re-assembled to project during the performance. These images of nature, labour, construction, and destruction inspired me to contemplate alternate stories in the footage, and try and create a live soundtrack shifting between atmospheric, ghostly, mechanical, and trance-inducing. (The clips are from my rehearsals). Hope Montreal friends can come out!

THE GOLDEN VILLAGE: Karen Cho’s latest short documentary looks at the parallel world of Chinese malls in Richmond, BC, where boy scouts meet in a Buddhist temple, retirees dance in food court atriums, and the God of Wealth replaces Santa Claus for the holidays. It was a pleasure to lens this project and work with such a talented and thoughtful team.

Premiering at Cinéma du Parc on Feb 25 – link in bio for tickets! It’s also a fundraiser for Montreal’s great @jiafoundationmtl - I’ll be part of a panel conversation with the crew.

WITH AN ACRE: Some images from the final film and exhibition in the @canadiancentreforarchitecture’s Groundwork series, which embarks into the research of @carlajuacaba as she stages a light-footed yet ambitious project in Brazil’s coffee-growing heartland, Minas Gerais. Working closely with @milenadealmeidarodrigues and @flordecafebr’s collective of smallholder coffee farmers, their project aims to promote more ecological ways of farming, to encourage reforestation in a region characterized by extractivism, and to help coffee producers receive higher compensation for the fruits of their labour.

With An Acre was beautifully lensed by @iris.ng.cinematographer, who I was so lucky to bring on to shoot for CCA for a second time! It was masterfully edited by @n10ee, who struck a perfect balance between scorching site visits and dreamy reflections in the narrative.

This film could not have been achieved without @jmbusquetss, whose producing, drone piloting, live interpretation, behind-the-scenes photography, and occasional animal wrangling allowed everything to come together. @igor.sci’s location sound and stunning surround recordings of the Atlantic Forest, along with mixing and sound design by @__operaa and @mortal_stream made the sound in this film perhaps the most engaging of the whole Groundwork series. And @olivier.seguidang.colo’s colour grading perfectly captured the impressive lushness, and unrelenting harshness, of the landscape.

It’s hard to encapsulate the intense and illuminating process of working on Groundwork with the CCA over almost two years, with the incredible team led by curators @fgarutti and Irene Chin with production manager @camillelp1089. I’m deeply grateful for their trust and support, and proud to have collaborated with our talented, devoted, (and nice!) team across the world, from Montreal to China, Germany, and Brazil.

Thank you to @yessica_oui @wavy_peas and @ahntg who gave me advice and encouragement from the very beginning and patiently lent their ears along the way.
