We finally checked Bird to Gird off our Alaska bucket list on Saturday with some friends, and it was awesome! We’ve wanted to do this ride for years, and I’m so happy we finally made it happen.

🚲 Here’s how we did it:

We started at Mile 103 on the Seward Highway and unloaded all the bikes. The husbands then drove both vehicles to Girdwood Station, left one car there, and drove the other back to the starting point. The shuttle took about 30 minutes.

The rest of us waited around for about 20 minutes before taking off. We knew they’d catch us pretty quickly—they’re fast! 😆

❄️ A few things we learned:

The weather was much colder than I anticipated. A few of my kids didn’t bring sweaters, but thankfully I still had a bag of donation clothes in the back of my van. It ended up outfitting several kids with warmer layers. 😂

We didn’t see any wildlife on the ride, but there was plenty of bear scat along the trail to remind us whose territory we were riding through! Jathan and Nova counted each pile as we rode past it 😆🐻💩

⛰️ About the ride:

The first portion is mostly gentle rolling hills. Around Mile 7, you hit about a mile of uphill. It’s not suuuuuper steep, but it will definitely burn your thighs!

Our younger two walked parts of the hill, but mostly stayed on their bikes and powered through it.

Then comes nearly 3 miles of downhill—and that part is an absolute blast!

🍕 Pro Tip:

Order pizza from Coast Pizza before you start the big climb—or as soon as you reach the top. (Thank you, Danielle, for this brilliant idea!)

By the time you finish the ride and coast into Girdwood Station, your pizza will be hot and ready for you. Best post-ride reward ever!

We started a new Christmas Eve tradition of ice skating last year, and it’s officially my favorite 🤍⛸️

I’ve been dying to get out on Portage to skate, but there was just too much Christmas-ing to sneak away earlier. I was so happy we didn’t get snow, because conditions were still amazing on Christmas Eve ❄️✨

Nova brought a sweatshirt instead of a coat and totally forgot gloves 🙃 thank goodness I had extras of both. She looked a little… special… out on the ice in all her oversized layers 😂

And holy smokes—it was COOOOLD 🥶 Nova had the best time for about 30 minutes, then couldn’t help but cry because her feet were frozen. Poor thing 💔 So Jathan took one for the team and headed back to the car with her. Zanna, Alta, and Roan lasted about 30 minutes longer before heading in too.

Troop was a champ and stayed out longer with me—even though his face was basically frozen 😅 like, early frostbite frozen. I had a face cover and honestly could’ve skated for another hour 😂

Such a blast, and I’m so thankful for this time we get to spend together as a family 🤍❄️ This year especially as Zanna will be leaving for college this summer 💕

Okay, this is a fun story! I was chatting with this darling skater as we passed each other on the lake, and mid-conversation I suddenly realized—wait! I’ve met you before! At Eklutna Lake during that insanely epic skating time back in January. How random!
She’s so fun to watch and absolutely gorgeous on the ice.
So… I guess Jathan and I have a new goal for this season: to skate like her, and recreate The Cutting Edge 😂 me as the Hockey skater, and him as the Figure skater. “We’re doing the Pamchenko!” by @j__c__g__

Wow, wow, wow!!! I’m still on cloud nine from yesterday’s ice skating trip! The skating was smooth as glass and the ice was crystal clear- we could even see fish swimming beneath us! Truly a euphoric experience. It’s a bit of a drive but absolutely worth it. Hopefully the snow doesn’t roll in before we make it back! by @j__c__g__

Happy 18th to Zan Zan. It’s funny that the day you were born literally feels like yesterday. I love you so very much for all that you are and for all that you will be. It’s almost time to roll in the snow again. These are my uncles words, his lessons for why we took snow baths growing up: “Where all good things begin!! “I am Dawn Boy, today and into the future I will stand impervious to pain and illness...into my hands will come beautiful horses; good relations everywhere; and good food and water....” Take your snow baths relatives. More than ever before we have to take care of our health, eat good and BE THE LEADERS we NEED to be! Set the example for our children and family. This is why we don’t say whatever or do whatever we want. Let them have the noise, we have the sacred to take care of.” This seems a fitting admonition for the times we are in and for what’s likely coming. I hated when we were taken out to roll in the snow. The crystals cut, the sharp cold rips your breath from your lungs, your body yearns for comfort. And then, after the fourth round, the snow is warm like a blanket, water drips from your skin and collects at your feet and your mind has been tested and is now sharp and no longer afraid. You had to walk through something uncomfortable, something you had a choice to remove yourself from but chose to stay, and you find that you are only bound as much as you believe yourself to be. Troop only has one lesson left, one more task to complete and I think this winter he will be ready. by @j__c__g__

For My Sister Tessie

For eight years, Tessie was his hands when his trembled, his steps when his legs gave out, his voice when the words came slow.

She gave him meals, warm clothes, and the gentle care that turned each day into something safe, worthwhile and something sacred.

It wasn’t always easy. She faced challenges, misunderstandings, and even moments of unkindness from others. But through it all, she stayed steady — anchored by her love for Grandpa, and by the quiet knowledge that what she was doing was both right and beautiful.

She traded her own time for his comfort, her own rest for his dignity. They built quiet routines and rhythms — little rituals that were theirs alone — and in them, they proved that love speaks louder than words.

She believed his promise to marry her to the man she loves…. He meant it — but sometimes heavens call arrives sooner than we wish.

And yet, Tessie, you gave him something even greater than that promise. You gave him the gift of leaving this world wrapped in love, purity, respect, and peace.
