Two aviation museum professionals talk about community history! Jamie and I are doing our Kilowatt History Talk again; from its role in the 1906 unpleasantness (as a firehouse) to a variety of identities on its way to what we know and love! The history of this building surprised me, so maybe you’ll find it interesting too. Anyway, it’s free! taken in Kilowatt Bar by @j_angiulo

My annual public appearance! Along with the illustrious Jamie O’Keefe, reviving our presentation for the 119th anniversary of The Late Unpleasantness (the 1906 Earthquake and Fire).

After a long and distinguished career as an SFFD firehouse, Kilowatt’s building filled a number of interesting roles in the city’s nightlife and alternative subcultures.

There are a few minor improvements, but it’s really the same presentation as the last two. But what else are you doing for happy hour on Good Friday?

No cover, no kids, no squares

I finally got examples of Bethlehem Shipbuilding worker’s badges from both yards in the #BethlehemSteel Union Plant—SF and Alameda—made 1916-30.

These local #shipyards evolved from the #UnionIronWorks, founded by the Donahue brothers in #SanFrancisco in 1849.

#BethlehemShipbuildingCorporation was founded in 1916. Both employee #badges are marked “Moise K” (#MoiseKlinkner), an old SF company that became part of Patrick & Co. in 1930.

The #Potrero Yard opened at 20th and Illinois in 1880. It’s now #Pier70, near my home on #PotreroHill.

The #Alameda Yard was formerly United Engineering Co, at the other end of the island from the #NavalAirStation, where USS Hornet CV-12 (my office) is currently docked.

Wednesday, April 17 at 6pm at Kilowatt; a rare public appearance!

Thursday the 18th is the 118th anniversary of the 1906 Earthquake & Fire. So we’re reviving our brief (and free!) slideshow and lecture on relevant topics.

Local history luminary Jaime will tell you about the building’s service as a firehouse, including some department history. I’ll then provide a brief outline of its second career as a nightlife institution, eventually resulting in the Kilowatt we know today.

No cover, no kids, no squares!

REPOSTED WITH CORRECT TIME!

Commemorate the 117th anniversary of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire with us! Tuesday night (April 18) at Kilowatt, classic Mission dive bar and former SFFD firehouse. Jamie and Joe (SF natives and professional history nerds) will give a short (and free!) slideshow about the department and the building.

Ahoy! You might have noticed a lot more aircraft carrier content here lately. You’re not just imagining things; I recently started a new job, Exhibits Manager on the museum ship USS Hornet (CV 12)!

It’s a part-time job, and I’m still figuring out exactly what it entails, but I’m already working on several really interesting projects. I’ll be able to employ my grad school training, production skills from my prior professional life, and my own passion for history — maritime, military and technological.

I’m still constantly getting lost on the ship, but I’m learning the ropes (HAHAHA), as well as nautical names for everyday stuff. 24-hour time does continue to confuse me.

USS Hornet is shown (July 1969), in the Pacific, under way to pick up Apollo 11. My last office building never did anything that interesting.

2021 was no picnic, but there were plenty of bright spots. My young nieces have been a constant source of joy (and the rest of my family is pretty alright too). I have kind, helpful and interesting friends. And I finally finished grad school; that’s a nice feeling, and now I get to find an awesome museum job!

But you’re here for #SwordContent, so here’s my Year In Review; this isn’t everything that crossed my desk, but favorite “new” additions to my #collection. Big thanks to the awesome sword-collecting community, and particularly @thierrytheswordguy and @antique_steel (check out his awesome new reference work on 19th century Italian swords!).

At left, a Saxon version of the Imperial German “neuer/Art.” artillery saber, dated 1913; a beautiful pre-#WWI example that fills a hole in my collection (now I need a scabbard for the Bavarian version and I’ll have the whole set).

Top left, a #Victorian #BowieKnife, by #HubbellRandall of NYC, perhaps 1880s?

Top right, a #Georgian naval #dirk c.1810; this is probably my favorite here. It’s a serious fighting weapon clearly assembled from some older elements. The blade is from an older sword, maybe 18th century? It’s been shortened and shows traces of gilding and engraving. The blade is almost 24” long, making this dirk an excellent contender in #knifeyspooney.

Bottom, a plain-jane Georgian #spadroon in the style of the British 1786 regulations: again, a collection gap filled.

At right, a slot-hilt #hanger or short horseman’s saber, 1760s-80s: a classic #AmericanRevolution design, and a type after which I’d been lusting for some time.

In completely unrelated news, I’m running out of wall space and will be selling a few swords in the immediate future: a Prussian n/A saber (no scabbard), an unmarked British 1822/45 infantry saber (ditto) and a named Victorian artillery officer’s saber (leather field scabbard and sword knot). #WatchThisSpace

Anyway, #HappyNewYear and best wishes for 2022!

Again, I have done a thing! A #museum #exhibit, my last project for #GradSchool! As an internship project with the Treasure Island Museum, I developed, researched, designed, curated and wrote a small exhibit about #Performance at the #GoldenGateInternationalExposition (aka #WorldsFair) on #TreasureIsland in 1939/40.

There are some objects on display, like paper #ephemera; the exhibit is mostly photographs and text, with links to recordings online. I found some great images and interesting, unexpected stories that will hopefully engage modern visitors.

When visiting Treasure Island, stop by Room 111, off the main lobby in Building 1 (the big old one) on weekdays between 9 and 5 to check it out (it’s free, and there’s plenty of other stuff to see out on the island). It should be there until April-ish, I believe.

Huge thanks to the staff and volunteers at the TI Museum; I had a great time putting this together, and learned so much! Now somebody hire me to develop history exhibits full-time…

(No swords this time; not even one. I’m as surprised as you are.)

FINALLY, the #exhibit I’ve been working on—#ConclaveCity—went live; this past weekend at #theMasonic, an audience of #Freemasons saw it, and select #FriendsAndRelations were able to stop by during a brief public viewing.

Those of you who did visit; I’m so grateful, and sincerely touched by the time and effort you took to come to my weird little show. Thank you all so, so much. I’m also inexpressibly grateful to the Grand Lodge of California and Joe Evans (the museum manager) for letting me assist with and contribute to this project.

We explored the Grand Lodge’s collection, and found objects that told an interesting story: about a group of distinguished Masons, and two conventions they held here in SF in 1883 and 1904. We showed #antique #uniforms, #ephemera and souvenirs from those events.

Not much #swordcontent, but it was exciting, challenging and exhausting, and it only took like a year and a half to develop. Now I have to write it up, file a mountain of paperwork, and #GTFO of #GradSchool. If you have questions about the exhibit or want to see more photos of anything, I’ll do my best to accommodate. An online version will be up soon. Thanks again!

Not #swordcontent for a change! I’m finally getting close to completing #GradSchool, and I’d like to share my capstone project with you!

I’ve been working on (and documenting) an exhibit at The Masonic in SF, using objects in their collection to tell a story. It will be on display for just one weekend, during the Freemasons’ big annual convention.

BUT! I did manage to arrange an afternoon for Friends And Relations to visit; if you can stop by Nob Hill on a Monday afternoon, please check out our show!

October 11, from 3pm to 5pm (I’ll actually be there until 6). Come through; It will also be online soon, so don’t feel obligated.

My niece Josephine, an important #emergingartist, drew this #portrait of me from life today. While clearly owing a great debt to the classic mid century #AbstractExpressionist canon—the influence of #CyTwombly is so obvious it scarcely merits mention—Josie’s work will undoubtedly continue to mature as her third birthday approaches. Crayon on coloring book paper is a conventional medium for artists of her cohort, and I think we are all eager to see her oeuvre expand, into both other traditional and new media.

I’ve been pretty negligent about new #swordcontent lately; my attention has been focused elsewhere, on my #thesis project and on surviving the pandemic (not to mention the general decay of society overall). I will do a 2020 year-in-review, but for now here’s a new addition—actually two—and an ethical question about #collecting.

This is my “new” 1796-pattern British light cavalry trooper’s saber, a plain example by #CravenAndBradbury of Birmingham, made in 1797 or ‘98. Perhaps the single most iconic #Georgian sword, its short service life is belied by its popularity with contemporary soldiers and modern collectors, as well as its influence on designs over the next century.

The #scabbard is completely unrelated and acquired separately, though it fits well; both sword and scabbard came to me from Canadian sources, coincidentally. It is unmarked; I have associated these two items together, but have clearly identified them as such in my collection records.

Is this dishonest or unethical? I’d say not, because I haven’t altered either object, created spurious records, or in any way tried to deceive. Rather, I’ve made display/storage decisions that create a single, coherent and historically accurate whole from disparate and incomplete objects. I’m sure that someone will (reasonably and legitimately) disagree, but I think this is the essence of collecting, be it #museum or private.
