African architecture doesn't have to only be organic forms…
I got a very interesting comment on my previous post about the MOVING WATER EARTH SCHOOL, which is
"African architecture doesn't have to only be organic forms : organic forms have proved over time to very difficult to build and manage, that's why you don't find too many of them about...
Maybe a further study and exploration of how to stem this challenge will be the beginning of the successful production of this sort of architecture; or evocative complementary alternatives ..."

This statement reminds me of the Makoko Floating School—a project that was bold, necessary, and deeply rooted in its context. Designed by Kunlé Adeyemi and NLÉ, it was more than just a building; it was a statement of possibility.

Built for a waterfront community in Lagos struggling with flooding and lack of infrastructure, the school used local materials (timber and barrels), floated on water, and responded directly to the people’s needs.

But it wasn't perfect.

The structure eventually collapsed due to structural and environmental challenges. Yet, it succeeded in sparking global dialogue about architecture in Africa, water-based communities, and the future of adaptable design.

Here’s what we can take away:

African architecture must blend creativity with constructibility.

Even failed projects can be valuable experiments, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

We need more research, iteration, and engineering support to make these bold ideas more durable and scalable.

Makoko didn’t just float—it made waves.

Let’s keep building African architecture that dares to try, learns from challenges, and grows stronger.

Today I want to share a few thoughts on a powerful piece of architecture—Moving Waters Secondary School.
This project is more than just a school. It’s a reminder of what African architecture can be when it responds to its people and environment.

First, the building uses passive cooling—like cross ventilation and open courtyards—showing how we can design smartly for Africa’s climate.

Second, it uses local materials. This not only reduces costs and environmental impact, but also supports local industries. That’s sustainability and community impact in one move.

Third, it’s people-centered. The design creates spaces not just for learning but also for gathering, connecting, and growing—a true reflection of our communal values.

Lastly, it proves something important:
You don’t need expensive materials or complex forms to create beautiful, functional spaces.
What we need is thoughtful design that reflects our culture, climate, and needs.

Let’s keep exploring and celebrating African architecture. Let’s keep building better." by @j_joel_a
