When I was 14 in ā€˜95, I was hanging out at my friend Wes’ house, and he had a briefcase of spray paint in his closet. We were bored so we decided to take a walk through the woods behind his house, and I tried my hand at using some paint under his influence. I hadn’t really thought about it at all before… so not having a name, I randomly thought to paint the word SNAP… and couldn’t think of a P to end on, so I just left it with the first three letters. Not a great story, and not a good word! Here’s me revisiting it in my late teens. #merz #firstpiecefriday taken in Cincinnati, OH by @j_merz

Stoked to get out to Pennsylvania recently and hang with my family there. Finally got to see my Uncle Joe do his annual hill climb at Weatherly, driving his Sprite… then got to take his Moke out to the local Steam-O-Rama. Even got some exercise in on my bike, with my Aunt Rebecca on a cool rail trail šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„ by @j_merz

The things you get excited about when you’re a house painting graffiti writer! I knew when I walked by the McCarren pool one day and saw them buffing it, that it meant the end of probably a few eras of people painting it… But I was also genuinely curious how they were approaching such a enormous task. The act of painting a 50 foot (?) arch alone seemed pretty wild to me at the time (still sorta does). I painted here a few times before they wrapped it up and started doing shows there, and got to see some killer groups like M.I.A., and Les Savvy Fav perform. Now I just need to get my pool membership so I can start swimming šŸŠā€ā™‚ļø

McCarren pool, 2000. Crazy rollcall: Kern, Rime, myself, Kemos, Met, Toper, and Joey Semz (R.I.P.). I probably never even noticed the Trade Centers were in this picture until way after the fact.

Had the most random gig… painting a floor of the newly built 7 World Trade Center, in 2006. It was for a girls hip-hop themed bat mitzvah! Shout out to my friend Sam on the assist.

I hope Abigail is chilling and doing well, and hope that you are too!

Summer went by quick, which is good… because I’m not the biggest fan. Spent all of August locked out of this account because I couldn’t remember any passwords. Feels like it’s been a minute since I posted… So here’s some photos from this past month, and a couple others (some people say that carousels are desperate, but I don’t think that’s true).

Finally made it the World Trade Center… come for the view, stay for the cheeseburgers! Thanks to my brother @djdannywhite for the viewing pass šŸ‘

Shout out to John A. Roebling (but really Emily Roebling)šŸ’„šŸ’„šŸ’„

First punk show I ever did see.

Hyped to be included in this years @signlanguage.gallery show in Louisville!

46 in the mix! Also, happy birthday to Mike Giant and R.Crumb. Had a late afternoon low key lunch with my brother this year.

Everything restorative all the time šŸ’¤

Shout to my mom for saving all my childhood ephemera. Here’s my one time going to the lovely Schwab summer school in Cincinnati.

I like hot pink as spray paint, but still don’t know if it’s my vibe šŸ˜‚

Never been a metal head really, but my zodiac is a metal monkey…

Ridgewood is one of those neighborhoods in New York that always feels really old timey to me. One time when I was going around with an address looking to see if I could find my grandpaā€˜s house, people were looking at me funny like I was up to no good. Coincidentally, 10 minutes later I got pulled over on my bike for running a red light and not having a bell! A few years later, I ended up finding his house which wasn’t where I was looking. Anytime I’m in that area, I like to go past his house on Forest Ave, and imagine what it would’ve been like in the time that he was there. by @j_merz

Working at Sbarro didn’t prepare me for moving to Brooklyn, but my friends and family did! Don’t know where I’d be without each and every one of them. Found this recently from my first month living in New York, at the F/G station in Carroll Gardens, August of ā€˜99.
