“Nature, when pleased with an idea, never tires of applying it.”
~ Mark Twain

A tiny moth echoes the hues of an overcast morning sunrise and the delicate patterns of a crescent moon.

Common Hoopoe (Upupa Epops), a beautiful orange bird draped in a black-and-white cape, bearing a sun-evoking headdress and a scythe-like bill. Unsurprisingly, it has long captured the human imagination, its earliest representations in human artwork dating back to the Paleolithic Age, where it appeared as the “bird-sun”. The name “Hoopoe” is an onomatopoeic rendering of its distinctive call.

“There is no mystery in this association of woods and otherworlds, for as anyone who has walked the woods knows, they are places of correspondence, of call and answer. Visual affinities of color, relief and texture abound. A fallen branch echoes the deltoid form of a streambed into which it has come to rest. Chrome yellow autumn elm leaves find their color rhyme in the eye-ring of the blackbird. Different aspects of the forest link unexpectedly with each other, and so it is that within the stories, different times and worlds can be joined.”

The Superb Lyrebird, native to the Australian rainforests. At first glance, it is very ordinary looking— a brown, pheasant-like bird —but then it turns, and the illusion breaks. From its body spills a tail unlike any other: long, filament-like plumes that arc and tremble, delicate as spun glass. When fanned out and catching the light, the tail resembles a fine, silvery lattice.

It is also a masterful mimic of borrowed sounds: the whirr of camera shutters, the revving of a chainsaw, the calls of other birds, even the echo of human voices in the distance. I’ve include a clip of one making an amazing repertoire of sounds.
