2023 broke me in ways I never thought possible.

One injury. Worn cartilage. Just like that, the game I loved was ripped away from me. For the first time in my life, I had to face the terrifying reality that I might never step on a basketball court again.

I fell into a dark place.

At the same time, my son had just been born. I wasn’t only fighting for myself anymore. I was fighting to provide for my family, struggling to find the next dollar while carrying the weight of uncertainty on my shoulders every single day.

What hurt the most wasn’t the pain in my knee…. it was watching the game go on without me.

Every day I wasn’t on that court felt like a piece of me was missing. But with every painful day that passed, the fire inside me grew stronger…. I refused to give up!

While the world slept, I was up at 5 a.m. Working long days delivering Amazon packages. Leaving for work at 7:30 in the morning and not getting home until after midnight. Then showing up for physio, training in my basement, and doing whatever it took to keep hope alive.

There came a moment when I got tired of feeling sorry for myself. I stopped focusing on what I lost and started believing in what was still possible.

I rewired my mind. I chose faith over fear. Gratitude over negativity. Growth over excuses.

My kids became my reason to keep going when I wanted to quit. My grandma’s strength ran through my veins every time life tried to knock me down.

Then an opportunity came through one of my boys… I stopped overthinking and said, “Forget it. I’m all in.” I bet on faith, hard work, myself, and the belief that my story wasn’t finished.

Looking back now, I realize something:

The injury didn’t destroy me.

It rebuilt me.

I’ve overcome fears that once controlled me. I’ve survived days I didn’t think I’d get through. I’ve become stronger, wiser, tougher, and more grateful than I ever was before.

The first chapter was built on talent. This chapter is built on pain, sacrifice, faith, and relentless perseverance.

And that’s why the comeback will be greater than the rise. The second run always hits different when you’ve already survived rock bottom. 🏁 by @jabari_c
