4. Gracia Maria Benitez (26) from Honduras, sits with her family at the Frontera Digna migrant shelter near the US-Mexico border in Piedras Negras, Mexico on 26 September 2024. Benitez and her family tried to cross the Rio Grande river near the Heavenly Farms pecan orchard but were hit with projectiles fired by the Texas National Guard so they had to turn back.

5. Maverick county sheriff deputy Sgt. Aaron Horta looks at graves of deceased undocumented immigrants in Eagle Pass, Texas on Wednesday 31 January 2024.

Migrants are drawn to the Rio Grande at the Texas-Mexico border, believing it to be a safer crossing point than the vast stretches of desert, but its treacherous currents have led to a sharp increase in drownings. Eagle Pass authorities are overwhelmed by the challenge of identifying and managing the influx of bodies, leaving families to endure the heart-wrenching task of searching for and repatriating their loved ones. This stretch of the river has become one of the deadliest, with over 1,100 drownings since 2017, many of them women and children. Despite the implementation of barriers and increased patrols aimed at deterring migration, people continue to risk their lives in hopes of crossing.

On 6 July 2016, Philando Castile was pulled over in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, for allegedly having a broken tail-light. Moments later, he was fatally shot by police officer Jeronimo Yanez. Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, captured what happened on video, with her four-year-old daughter in the back seat.⁣

Castile's shooting sparked civil unrest across the Twin Cities, with police using pepper spray and non lethal rounds to disperse protesters who shut down a major highway. His family joined in the marching and demonstrations, calling for peace as they called for justice. In November 2016, the state announced Jeronimo Yanez was charged with manslaughter and in July 2017, he was acquitted of all charges.

Taking 43 lives, Hurricane Michael was the strongest recorded hurricane to make landfall on Florida’s Panhandle, reaching an unpredicted and unprecedented category 4 just hours before sweeping the gulf coast. Its destruction occurred in some of Florida’s most impoverished regions where many residents found themselves at a devastating disadvantage with no resources to evacuate or ways to seek help.

As Texas leaders prepare for the end of the Title 42 border policy — the pandemic-era public health rule that resulted in automatic expulsions for most migrants — Kinney County offers a lens into the more aggressive tactics some border sheriffs have adopted even before the expected surge in the weeks ahead. The Biden administration plans to lift the order today, and already, growing number of migrants are arriving at the Southwest border.
Kinney County officials were the first to declare a local “border crisis” emergency two years ago, allowing authorities to act with the same executive powers they often utilize after a major storm. Here, deputies act as a de facto U.S. Border Patrol extension, spending much of their time capturing migrants. Sheriff’s deputies have arrested nearly twice as many migrants in the past two years as there are residents in the remote ranching community. taken in Brackettville, Texas by @jabinbotsford
