This is the first interiors project under my new studio, JACK All Terrain Studio, and it was done with a friend and artist, @don.javis .

Jon is a jack of all trades himself, so in many ways, he understands what JACK embodies just as much as I do. He was also the first person to photograph my T-shirts three years ago.

The project was shaped by a few unusual constraints. The first was that 80% of the floor needed to be covered with rugs for sound insulation. Before we could even think about furniture or layouts, a good portion of our budget was already spoken for lol.

Due to the layout, the main living space had to function as both a traditional living room and a listening room. Up until the last hour, we debated the placement of the acoustic panels. As designers, I think we often get caught up in what is considered "correct" or "incorrect" in a space. Jon pushed to keep the panels as in near the speakers, and I'm glad he did. They became a defining feature of the room, functioning as both acoustic treatment and something almost sculptural. JACK is about finding beauty in function and reality, rather than trying to conceal them.

Most of the project was designed remotely through phone calls, shared images, and many conversations about Facebook Marketplace finds. It wasn't an ideal process, but it was the right one for this project.

This project reminded me that good design doesn't always come from ideal conditions. Sometimes, the constraints, conversations, and willingness to let go of what feels "correct" are what make a space special.

What an experience. Thanks, Jon. taken in New York City by @jack.ats

Cerca Collection plus merchandise out now!

The Cerca Collection is a growing body of furniture inspired by landscape fencing. The construction is legible and honest; joints remain visible; and repetition is evident. There is an intentional resistance to opulence. Instead, the pieces occupy a space of quiet familiarity. They feel known, even when encountered for the first time.
