I found a sunflower growing in a cement crack near my work, blossoming under blocked sun, in sterile soil. It looked frail and thin. Leant away from the wall, maybe in an attempt to get more sun, its weakened stem hangs at the neck. It looks as though she hangs her head in despair. My heart began to sink.

Does she despair at the company she keeps? The dwindling nutrients in the dirt? Perhaps she grieves the life she could have lived, would she be more glorious had her beginnings been more grand?

Well I had these questions and needed them answered. I walked up to, and jumped the construction site fence. I spoke to the sunflower and we became friends immediately. It turns out we had a great deal in common. We shared stories, told of past lovers and heartaches, of friends and glory, of challenges and triumph. I came to understand her better than I have anyone else in my life.

She was looking down at the ground because something beautiful caught her eye. I felt a bit silly. Of course! How wonderful it is to be a beautiful flower in a beautiful world.
