29 was a year I’ll never forget.

I found my edge, pushed myself further than ever, made strides in business, ran 100 miles, met incredible people, made hard decisions, failed, learned, laughed and grew.

Most importantly, I learned life isn’t just about what you accomplish. Enjoy the ride.

30 lessons for 30:

1. Find your edge.
2. Do it scared.
3. Keep doing hard things.
4. Don’t forget to smile.
5. “The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” — Marcus Aurelius
6. Surround yourself with people who push you.
7. Always sharpen the spear.
8. Make people smile.
9. You don’t need all the answers. Take the next step.
10. “He who has a why can bear almost any how.” — Nietzsche
11. Your people matter more than your accomplishments.
12. Choose friends who celebrate your wins and stand by your losses.
13. Call your family. Tell them you love them.
14. Don’t take life too seriously.
15. Enjoy the little things.
16. Choose people who choose you.
17. Love deeply enough to risk getting hurt.
18. The right partner makes a great life even better.
19. Tell people how you feel.
20. “Rise and rise again until lambs become lions.” — Robin Hood
21. Be where your feet are.
22. Failure is tuition. Learn and keep moving.
23. Optimism is a superpower.
24. You can always take one more step.
25. Have fun. Seriously. That’s the fucking point.
26. Stop keeping score against other people.
27. “What stands in the way becomes the way.” — Marcus Aurelius
28. Know when to endure and when to change direction.
29. Don’t forget to enjoy the life you’re living while chasing the one you want.
30. Strive for more. Stay grateful for what you have.

To everyone in my corner, thank you. You’ve shaped me more than you know.

Keep finding your edge. Keep sharpening the spear. Love your people. Smile. Have some fucking fun.

Here’s to 30. The best is yet to come. by @jack_espy

Unpacking what it means to complete the Leadville 100, four words keep coming back to me: resilience, gratitude, positivity, and love.

Resilience. You can push your body to a place you never thought possible, and somehow, it keeps going. Your mind will falter long before your body breaks. There were moments when everything in me wanted to stop, but you learn you can always take another step. And then another. Knowing you can keep going when it gets hard is something I’ll carry with me forever.

Gratitude. Gratitude for having the opportunity and ability to run 100 miles through the mountains. Gratitude for every person who supported me throughout this journey. My friends, family, crew, coaches, and everyone who believed in me. You may be the one running the miles, but you sure as hell don’t get there alone.

Positivity. Over 100 miles, things will go wrong. You’re going to hurt. Plans will change. You can’t control every circumstance, but you can control how you respond. Positivity isn’t pretending things aren’t hard, it’s believing you’ll find a way through them. When things got dark, staying positive kept pulling me forward.

And lastly, love. Love for my friends, my family, my crew, and the people out on that course. There’s something incredible about Leadville. Everyone has their own goal, yet somehow everyone is in it together. You feel the love and support everywhere you turn.

Those four words came back to me time and time again over 100 miles.

Finishing the Leadville 100 changed me as a man and gave me a new perspective on life. Crossing that finish line is something I’ll be proud of forever, but the distance wasn’t the greatest accomplishment.

The greatest accomplishment was unlocking something more within myself.

Knowing I can keep going when things feel impossible. Knowing I have incredible family and friends behind me. Knowing I can choose positivity regardless of the circumstances. Knowing how much I have to be grateful for. And above all, knowing how much love I have in my heart and around me.

I went to Leadville to see if I could run 100 miles.

I left knowing there is so much more inside of me than I ever realized.
