Scrummies 2026- Speech

Firstly, thank you to the bar staff, mandy, sophia bets and anyone else who was involved in putting this meal on.

Thank you all so much for having me here today, and for everything Kingsbridge RFC has done to support me.

Walking into a room of 50 women — as the one bloke here, might I add — is not something I do every day. My mates are never going to let me live this down, but honestly, it was worth it.

And to the Salcombe contingent — thank you for crossing enemy lines to be here today. I promise the Kingsbridge lot will only bring it up occasionally. For those who don’t know the full story: I was diagnosed with brain cancer back in 2019 November. That turned into radiotherapy over Christmas — though they were kind enough to give me Christmas Day off, so at least someone had their priorities straight. After that came seven to nine rounds of temozolomide, which is a form of chemotherapy, and I was lucky enough to get a three to four year reprieve where things were classified as stable.

Then, as these things tend to do, it came back. We tried temozolomide again for three months, but it turned out my particular brain cancer is chemo-resistant — so that plan got scrapped, and instead I had three resections in six months, followed by a second round of radiotherapy, which held the disease off for over a year. Then in July this year, I had surgery again. It’s been a tough few months since — treatment, recovery, and a lot of ups and downs. Turns out brain surgery is a great way to gain weight as the steriod they gives you energy but has the unfortunate side effect making you want to eat everything in sight!!

Through all of it, training has kept me going. It’s given me something to focus on, a goal to work towards, and honestly, some of the toughest but most rewarding days of this whole journey. In a couple of weeks I’ll be taking on the Tamar 10km, and then it’s Hyrox Birmingham, where I’ll be racing Mixed Pairs alongside my mum — who, for the record, is considerably fitter than me right now, so really I’m just there to keep up.

Look to the next page…

Now, the reason I need to fundraise in the first place is honestly a bit mad. If I had taken in Kingsbridge Rugby Club by @jack_howitt

Progress update: 4th August → today.

Since early August I’ve been building back from brain surgery — starting with gentle cycling to get the engine going again, no running, no lifting, just steady aerobic work while the body healed. A few weeks ago I finally got back to running, and it’s been a slow, honest process since then — building up run intervals, adding stations back in, slowly reintroducing strength work.

I’ll be honest: this recovery has hit differently. I’m noticeably weaker than I was coming back from my last surgery, especially on my right side — it’s something I’m having to work around and listen to carefully with every session, rather than push through.

Despite that, I’m on track. On 18th October I’ll be taking on the Tamar 10km — my first proper 10km back since surgery — and then it’s only a couple of weeks after that until Hyrox Birmingham, where I’ll be racing Mixed Pairs alongside my mum, with the rest of the team competing in their own categories.

Every session banked between now and then is a step closer to that start line. Onwards. 💙

In 2026 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour (GBM), found during a biopsy. Since then it’s been one round of radiotherapy, eight rounds of temozolomide, a recurrence, three more rounds of temozolomide, another round of radiotherapy, and four resection surgeries. Most recently, fourteen days in hospital due to seizures — frustrating, because I was medically fit to go home after just one.

I’m now on bevacizumab, which isn’t funded on the NHS for my type of cancer, so I’m covering it privately alongside everything else.

Through all of it, training has been the constant. Ten weeks post-op, I’ll be lining up at Hyrox Birmingham with my team — Mixed Pairs, Women’s Singles, and Men’s Singles, all four of us fundraising for Macmillan. The peeps tagged are the psycho’s who will be joining me on the start line.

This isn’t a highlight reel. It’s been hard, it still is hard, and there’s more road ahead. But I’m still here, still training, still fighting — and I wanted to share it properly rather than in pieces.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported me so far — friends, family, and people I’ve never even met. It means more than you know. 💙

This weekend, the Willpower community, friends and family, came together in support of our wonderful @jack_howitt. Jack has been fighting brain cancer for over seven years and now needs vital treatment that is currently unfunded, so Share the Load Games was our way of helping to raise money towards his treatment ❤️

We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along, took part, donated and helped make the event such a success. The support shown for Jack and his family has been incredible.

A special thank you to @salcombemeatcompany17, @bakehousesalcombe and @salcombedairy , who generously donated everything for the BBQ, and to our brilliant local businesses @aloftco, @discoverysurfschool, @nkukulife and @frothedcoffeeroasters, whose generous raffle prizes helped make the raffle a huge success.

And finally, a shout out to @mandy.j.palmer for planning such an incredible afternoon and really putting us through our paces.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who gave their time, donated, took part or simply came along to show their support. It was a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together to Share the Load.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. 💙

Mallory Park Duathlon
5km 🏃‍♂️ 20km 🚴‍♂️ 2.5km 🏃‍♂️

It was my first duathlon at this distance. I tried ease in to the didtance with a solid 80% effort all the way round. Not the worst result considering it was my first time and the bike route was quite technical.

Grand Final at Mallory Park!

The race was meant to be a Super Sprint Triathlon but after difficulties with a control valve leaving the lake dry it was changed to a Duathlon.

Distances: 2.5km 🏃‍♂️ 9.77km 🚴‍♂️ 1.25km 🏃‍♂️

I had an injured foot going into this race so my run wasnt too good.

My cycling wasnt the best either but was much less effected by the injury.

It was amazing to pick up the first place in the race and the overall series.

And with that race being completed that is the end of the season. Can’t wait for next season to see what improvements i can make. taken in Mallory Park Racing Circuit by @jack_howitt

Another Race Finished!

Super Series Super Sprint Triathlon at Dorney Lake.

Distances: 400m 🏊‍♂️ 10km 🚴‍♂️ 2.5km 🏃‍♂️

The swim went okay, however I did have some trouble getting out of the water. Fell over twice and cut my foot 😅.

Enjoyed the bike, went quite quickly though! And of course, my leg brace came undone with 3km to go stopping me from pushing hard.

Finally the run was a hard out and back. Felt like forever to the turn point but felt much better coming back in.

Great event and got my first win of the season.

Onwards and upwards!

Midnight Man @bridgeeventsdartford

I took part in the Sprint Triathlon over in Dartford on the 12th August. I finished in a time of 1:40:05 coming 3rd in my category and 10th overall in the Sprint race.

The distances were a bit longer than usual: 950m 🏊‍♂️ 21km 🚴‍♂️ 5.5km 🏃‍♂️

I completed the swim in 26:54 which is not a great time, but sounds a little bit better when you realise i was caught in a net at one stage and loosely tied to another athlete. I also took swam around an extra bouy by mistake adding 150m-250m onto my swim 😅

The bike took me 38:59 which was pretty good going as there were two really tight and technical corners and 4 dead turns (hairpins) per lap which slowed me down.

I finished off with a run of 27:05 which wasnt too bad. I took the run steady and just wanted a solid 80% effort which i think i achieved.

Super Series Swansea 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

So this was a few weeks ago now but I took part in the Super Series race in Swansea.

The race was due to be a super sprint triathlon- 400m 🏊‍♂️ 10km 🚴‍♂️ 2.5km 🏃‍♂️

The race was changed from a triathlon to a swim-run due to high wind speed.

I came in second place with a time of 26:12. First place was 4 minutes up the road, so the take away is to work a lot harder and hopefully win the next event.

Next event is 26th August for British Champs- I have a feeling some big guns might turn up, so we’ll see what happens 👀 taken in SA1 Swansea Waterfront by @jack_howitt

Hyrox Barcelona!

I’m sure many of you have already seen some of these photos but let me explain what they’re about…

This was my first solo Hyrox, after posting a time in London of 1:37:33 with @gazzatee111

I had a primary goal of sub 2:00:00. All was going well until I hit the burpees where which took me over 10mins and then walking lunges, which took me a long time too!

Anyways I ended up with a time of 2:01:48!

This was bittersweet as I was happy to complete it but upset to be so close to my target time!

Onto the next one where I’ll be competing in the duos again, but with @willpowerfitness at the end of April!
