Day 1 building a mobile app 👨‍💻

I’ve been inactive on here for a few years now, but have recently started building my third mobile app and want to document the process.

Today was spent designing the app in Figma. I want it to be as native as possible and look and feel like it could be built by Apple.

Luckily they’ve got a UI Kit in Figma so that’s nice and easy.

I’ll be posting semi-regular updates on here so follow along for the journey.

I’ll also be marketing the app over at @climbtheladderapp by @jackbcodes

Finally reached everyone’s favourite number!

Bit of a short one today but continuing with Sass and the content that I missed out from the last post! 👍 by @jackbcodes

Progress with Firebase 🔥

I’ve used Firebase before following one of Wesbos courses but wanted to try and implement into my project by myself. Needless to say, it was a lot harder than I remember in the tutorial! So, I didn’t make as much progress as I’d have liked to but going try again tomorrow! 👍

In my gym web app, I’m going to use Firebase for user authentication and to store each users programmes and workouts. If anyone’s used Firebase before and can suggest some good resources that’d be really helpful, thanks! by @jackbcodes

Made some good progress on my gym web app today! Got it to the point where a user can create a workout programme. Now, I just need to display the programme so the user can interact with it. There’s a little demo of it in my story if you guys want to see! 👀

Going back to this project after learning Sass has made me realise how awfully I structured the CSS. So, I’ll have to refactor that at some point - and I’m putting that off as I know it won’t be fun 😂

What I’ve Learnt This Week: Sass/Scss!

Really enjoyed learning about Sass and found it very useful! Hopefully you guys think the same?

There’s a couple things I’ve left of here. You can do calculations in Sass using the usual operators. And, you can use inheritance so that one part of you CSS can extend another and get its properties.

Made good progress on my gym web app today! Still a long way to go until it’s finished but I’m definitely getting there. I’ll do a demo of it soon once I’m happy with it! Felt good getting back into the flow state 🔥

I haven’t taken any annual leave this year yet, which is pretty crazy seeing as its mid June, but got a day off work tomorrow! I felt like I’d be wasting my holiday allowance a bit seeing as there’s nothing to do. Saying that, I’m quite looking forward to do nothing 😅 by @jackbcodes

Took a bit of an unexpected break from coding the last few days!

Not too sure why but I lost all my motivation to do anything. Maybe I was putting too much stress on myself, but I’m back at it now! Gonna pick up the 100 days challenge where I left off, know that’s breaking the rules a bit though 😅

Dived into learning Sass today and wish I’d done it sooner!! Was always hesitant to learn it but some of the stuff you can do with it is mad. Will save me time on styling for sure. I was particularly impressed with the ‘mixins’ where you can extract styles into a function and use them dynamically throughout your styling. Gonna do this weeks post on it so you guys can see the benefits - @developedbyed does an amazing video on it so go check that out!

What I’ve Learnt This Week: React useEffect Hook!

I’ve still got a lot to learn about this hook but I’m confident in saying I know the basics now. I’m still a bit unsure why you’d use a class component over a function components, but I’m planning to dive a bit deeper into that this week.

What have you guys learnt this week? 🔥 by @jackbcodes

Do you give a f*ck?

Did a fair amount of coding today but nothing massively interesting! However, I did finish this book! It was recommended to me by @developerdylan and it’s probably the first non-fiction book I’ve ever read. Actually, it’s the first book I’ve read since primary school. Yes, I know that’s bad 😂

Really enjoyed this one though and definitely gave me a new perspective on a lot of things! Am planning to start reading a lot more, so if you’ve got any book suggestions - hit me up! 💪 by @jackbcodes

Spent most of today finishing off the design for my gym tracking app! And I can definitely tell my CSS skills have improved recently, even though CSS does take me forever 😅

Bit of advice for people looking for a project to start - build something that you would use or something that would help you out.

For example, whenever I go to the gym (sadly not at the moment 😢), I always used the notes app on my phone to record how many reps, sets and weights I did for each exercise. So, I thought hey why don’t I build a site which will store all that for me and make my life a hell of a lot easier! I can say that my motivation for this project has been higher than for any other project because it’s something I’m passionate about and will use (if it actually works)! by @jackbcodes

Deploying with Vercel!

Today I had a play around with Vercel and used it to deploy my to-do app! Not sure why but I was always a bit scared of the thought of actually deploying a site. Turns out it was really easy and now I dunno why I was so worried 😂

After finishing that project, I was a bit lost about what to do next, but have decided to make a web app where gym goers can make workout plans and log their sets and weights! It’s going to be a challenge and I may be in way over my head, but hay ho that’s how you learn! by @jackbcodes
