Last week we’ve made this video to support my nomination for the first Biophilic Design Awards, to be announced at an award ceremony on October 22nd at Sweco Eindhoven, during @dutchdesignweek. I’m nominated in the Product section. It will be a jury decision, but the public can also vote. Go to @biophilic_design_academy and check the link in bio to actually vote for your favourite biophilic project, for instance mine😉.

Throwback at another Fiber Fever! presentation at @designdistrictnl Rotterdam last May, and @dutchdesignweek coming up in a few weeks. I will be present in the building of @piet_hein_eek at the Occasion expo of the Ad Hoc Collective. I’m the senior in this group of design studio’s, which consists of @jimbobruijgrok @lucasenvanstratum @willem.zwiers @nielsstoeltiedesign @studiobeeks

Yesterday I received the news that I’m nominated with my hemp lamps for the 2026 @biophilic_design_academy design awards. The award ceremony will be held on October 22nd in Eindhoven during Dutch Design Week.

𝗡𝗜𝗘𝗨𝗪 𝗜𝗡 𝗗𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗜𝗢: 𝗠𝗧𝟯𝟴𝟬 𝗕𝗜𝗢𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗗. 🌿

De bekende Major Tom van Jack Brandsma, maar dan in een compleet nieuwe uitvoering. De MT380 BioBased is het resultaat van jarenlang materiaalonderzoek waarbij Jack experimenteert met natuurlijke vezels en aardappelzetmeel als alternatief voor conventionele materialen.

En het mooie is: het materiaal mag je ook echt zien. Geen poging om biobased design eruit te laten zien als kunststof of metaal, maar juist een eerlijke, pure uitstraling waarin materiaal en vorm samen het ontwerp bepalen.

Vanaf nu is de nieuwe MT380 BioBased bij ons in de Studio in Rotterdam te bewonderen. 😍 Deze week zijn we geopend op donderdag, zaterdag en zondag van 11.00 tot 18.00 uur.

Academie Minerva Design Graduation Show 2026 — Report by Jack Brandsma

As you wander through the building, you move from one presentation to the next, and it becomes clear that this is a design program at an art academy. The boundary between design and visual arts has always existed here, but the trend toward this boundary blurring is also evident here.

Duurzaamheid hoeft nooit ten koste te gaan van goed design. De MT380 BioBased van Jack Brandsma bewijst juist het tegenovergestelde. Een uitgesproken ontwerp, vervaardigd uit biobased materialen, met oog voor de toekomst én voor esthetiek.

𝗠𝗧𝟯𝟴𝟬 𝗗𝗢𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗕𝗜𝗢𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗗. In één woord geweldig. 😊

Met de nieuwe MT380 Double BioBased laat Jack Brandsma opnieuw zien hoe design, innovatie en materiaalontwikkeling samen kunnen komen in één krachtig ontwerp. Waar de collectie eerder werd geproduceerd met fossiele materialen, maakt Jack nu steeds vaker de omschakeling naar biobased alternatieven zoals aardappelzetmeel en olifantengras. Een bewuste stap richting een duurzamere toekomst, zonder concessies te doen aan uitstraling, kwaliteit en karakter.

Wij zijn trots dat wij als sales agent betrokken mogen zijn bij deze bijzondere collectie. Binnenkort is de nieuwe MT380 Double BioBased ook te bewonderen in onze Studio én op onze website.

Wil je de collectie liever eerder in het echt ervaren? Vandaag en morgen staan wij samen met @jackbrandsma op Design District in Van Nelle Fabriek. Gisteren was het al gezellig druk en met dit prachtige weer is het echt heerlijk vertoeven daar. 😊

Goed om te weten: morgen is Design District ook toegankelijk voor particulieren.

Throwback at Design District 2016 in Zaandam, with the support of @studiorobvanderhoeven (picture 1).

After 10 years I will be back at @designdistrictnl Rotterdam next week with a nice overview of biobased versions of some of my products. Those who know of pioneering know blood, sweat & tears. Perseverance pays off eventually, there will be some products available for your projects.
I will be supported by @lloydindustrials in the journey to make this story grow. Despite the beautiful weather this coming week, I hope to meet you at the Van Nelle factory May 27-29. by @jackbrandsma

𝗕𝗜𝗢 𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗡 𝗠𝗘𝗧 𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗛𝗔𝗔𝗟. ✨

De Major Tom Bio collectie van @jackbrandsma laat zien hoe design, innovatie en duurzaamheid samen kunnen komen in één krachtig ontwerp. Voor deze bijzondere serie wordt gewerkt met biobased materialen en natuurlijke vezels, zonder concessies te doen aan uitstraling of lichtkwaliteit. Het resultaat is een warme, grafische collectie met een bijna futuristisch karakter.

Wat wij sterk vinden aan deze collectie is dat de lampen niet schreeuwen om aandacht, maar juist door materiaal, structuur en lichtbeleving enorm veel sfeer brengen in een interieur. De combinatie van zachte natuurlijke tinten met de herkenbare Major Tom vormgeving maakt deze serie echt uniek.

Van 27 t/m 29 mei is de bio based Major Tom collectie te bewonderen tijdens @designdistrictnl in de Van Nelle Fabriek in Rotterdam. Jack Brandsma staat daar samen met Studio Lloyd Industrials op stand D13.

Deze week zijn wij van donderdag t/m zondag geopend in onze Studio onder de Rotterdamse Hofbogen. 🔥

Spotted at @defundatie Zwolle, prototype out of the first batch of biobased Major Tom lamps. The museum obtained this prototype for their collection last year, after the exhibition (OP)NIEUW, a joint project with @hesteroerlemans.
Last week a first batch of potato starch plastics was produced as panels and we will now be able to start producing components in March/April, focusing on the launch of the production models at @designdistrictnl Rotterdam at the end of May.
Two samples can also be seen at @lloydindustrials Rotterdam, who are now the agent for all my lighting objects. To be continued…

𝗞𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗹𝗼𝗽𝘁 𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻, 𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗮𝗴. 🌱 Op de achtergrond zie je de geweldige kleurrijke Major Tom lampen van Jack Brandsma. 🎨✨ Deze uitvoeringen zijn gemaakt van fossiele materialen. Op de voorgrond hangen twee MT380 armaturen in hun pure vorm. 🌿💡 Biobased en gemaakt van aardappelzetmeel. Eerlijk materiaal waarin het ontwerp voor zichzelf spreekt.

De biobased MT380 is leverbaar vanaf medio mei en nu al te bewonderen én te bestellen in onze Studio in Rotterdam. 📍🏙️ Design dat laat zien dat bewust kiezen ook gewoon heel mooi kan zijn. 🤍

𝗪𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝘂𝗸𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼. ❄️ Vandaag hadden we opvallend veel bezoekers. En eerlijk is eerlijk. Dat hadden we met deze kou niet helemaal verwacht. Juist daarom extra leuk! 😉 Mooi om te merken dat veel mensen onze website vooraf bekijken en hier in de Studio al zó veel over de lampen kunnen vertellen. En minstens zo fijn om te horen dat bezoekers aangenaam verrast zijn door de collectie. We hebben misschien geen 500 m², maar er is hier echt meer dan genoeg te zien en te ontdekken.👀

De populaire, kleurrijke Major Tom serie van @jackbrandsma hebben we bovendien nét iets uitgebreid. Benieuwd? Kom morgen gerust langs. Je bent van harte welkom. 😊

Throwback at my Fibre Fever! presentation during @design_passage 2025, which was my 6th presentation in 2025. After the Dutch Design Week presentation at @piet_hein_eek in October this was the second show where I’ve presented my classics next to the versions in alternative materials, read: biobased or recycled.
Now recovering and contemplating: 2025 was my comeback year after 5 years of almost fulltime being a lecturer/researcher at @academieminerva. Education is still important, but is now the side job again.
2026 will be the breakthrough year for the bioplastic products I’ve shown as prototypes in the past year. I now have the possibility to scale up the production of the bio versions of the Major Tom lamps and the handmade hemp/potato versions already found their way in a few projects. Like the prize winning interior of @spring.studio.interiordesign, who won a Dezeen award for best sustainable interior for @wec.waddenzee.
So the first quarter of 2026 will all be about organising the new production and further work on the distribution of products. In that context I will start a new cooperation with @lloydindustrials in Rotterdam, who will become my agent for the lighting products, starting at January 1st 2026.
