President’s Choice Award winner!!!

I am absolutely stoked to have won this year’s President’s Choice Award for my painting ‘I’m Still in Love With Phoebe Cates’.

The private view last night was a spectacular evening, with some incredible works on display, curated beautifully through the gallery.

The show was packed and buzzing. I feel incredibly happy to have shared the night with my friends and family there to witness me receive my award.

The highlight was being able to take my son Milo up with me and embrace that moment with him.

A huge thank you to Mall Galleries, The Royal Institute of Painters In Watercolours and especially, Juliette Losq for selecting my work.

My head is still spinning with joy! x

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2024!
I’ve had to take the week to digest Varnishing Day before posting anything as it was an absolute blur and time evaporated like a droplet on hot concrete. I had an amazing time. Spending it with friends who also made it into this year’s show made the day even more special. The work was superb and I feel incredibly blessed to share the walls with some real heavyweights. I returned to the exhibition today with Georgia and got the chance to take it all in. A huge thanks to @anne_desmet for selecting my work and for the awesome curation in room 8 which included the most gorgeous @amy_dury painting on the opposite wall to me.

Looking forward to a few more visits over the next couple of months. x

Thanks @royalacademyarts

I’m Still in Love With Phoebe Cates, 40.5 x 51.5cm, Gouache on Board.

Nostalgia. The bus stop, the portal to every great adventure and drunken, drug fuelled mishap when I was a teenager. The start and end to a journey, yet now as an adult these spaces pass me by. Whilst painting this quaint symbol of community, somewhat lost in the landscape, I couldn’t help but think of all the insane things that happened centred around buses and bus stops as a teenager. These were our vessels, voyaging through volatile concrete seas, an important part of connecting with friends and in some cases enemies. The graffiti crews I hung out with, the punks, the rude boys, my friends, we all have a story to tell. Travel causes us to reflect, to think about the past, a somewhat unhealthy place to live, I look forward. by @jackcandykemp

Trauma Bonds, 15 x 21cm, Gouache on Board.

It’s been a while. I recently went to Outbreak festival in Manchester and spent the weekend with a friend, watching bands, catching up and coming home inspired.

One moment in particular that stuck with me was watching the band High Vis and listening to a heart wrenching, harrowing story about the personal battles @graham_sayle endured and how sobriety has helped him move forward and keep creating. The story and journey resonated with myself in many ways and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

It’s nice to get back to it with a clearer head. Taking time away from your own work feels more productive than it seems. I feel like I’m less constrained and have returned to the roots of my practice.

I’ve listened to High Vis on repeat whilst painting this. x by @jackcandykemp

View from La folie douce val d’isere, 67.5 x 83.5cm, Acrylic Gouache on Canvas.

A commissioned painting for a client and friend who wanted me to capture a view from their favourite restaurant from their a trip to France.

There was a lot of talks before I started painting, especially on the composition and how it was to be adapted to my style and fit the narrative of places passed by.

I didn’t want to take it too far out of the clients comfort zone but at the same time had to empty and fill spaces whilst letting the viewer be drawn into the landscape. It felt like a constant push and pull and at times near impossible to get the desired aesthetic I was looking for without freaking out the buyer.

I’m happy with the finished work and am very much looking forward to seeing it hanging on their wall.

Right now I’m experimenting with materials and mediums and taking my time, playing around with different ways to push my next paintings forward.

13 years sober.

I missed posting last year. I felt overwhelmed by the counting, the pressure and feelings of want for ultimate obliteration.

Thirteen years feels good. It has fallen at the right time as I’m home and present after a year of non stop painting for a new Warner Bros production. I still find life incredibly strange. I understand more and more the thought process of drinking to escape and the lure of numbing yourself to just exist.
Since having another child I have had to adjust to a new structure, work harder and accept that my own art has to slow down momentarily which has been tough and somewhat claustrophobic.

The last week has been magic. Time with the family and time to breathe. Getting to know Matilda and seeing how wonderful she is makes every stress and worry worthwhile. Milo is still the wildest, funniest character and my biggest fan.

I feel proud of everything I’ve achieved, proud of my kids and wife and all they do.

I have realised that for now I have enough, have done enough and everything hopefully in time will fall into place, as it always does.

I’m slowly putting together references and surfaces for new paintings. Getting the studio ready and ultimately putting family first.

Thanks as always to everyone that helped when I got off the drink, especially my wife who met me when I was only six month sober.

Sorry to all those that got the worst of me whilst I was a mess. X by @jackcandykemp

Thank you to @royal_institute_watercolours and @juliette_losq for awarding me this year’s Presidents Choice Award.

I’m still just a punk kid from a London suburb that can only make some sort of sense of the world through painting. Knowing that my work is appreciated is nothing short of magical.

Go check out the show @mallgalleries which runs until April 11th.

Very happy to have made the long list for this year’s Jackson’s Art Prize.

My two paintings, En Passant and Only memories have made the top 6% out of 16,200 entries from 110 counties. There are some incredible works that have made it through to the last 1000 works and wish everyone involved the best of luck going forward.

The world is a mess, at least there’s art being made… for now. x

2025 has been pretty good. After finishing a series of work earlier in the year with the promise of a London show which fell through I was starting to feel a little disheartened. I knew producing work would be tough this year with me and my wife expecting another child and that film work would have to take a priority. By the luck of the Gods, things always turn around and shortly after realising the show was dead I got an email to say my work had been selected to be shown in NYC. This was an incredible time for me and also taught me not to rush, chase or be subservient to situations.

I had no plans to create a series from NYC but while I was out there ended up in Long Island which was a liminal goldmine of wonderful in between spaces that I passed by with my friends. I am currently going through over a thousand photos to whittle down enough reference for my next series which I’m really excited about.

Film work has been awesome this year, working on a new Warner Brothers production and getting to paint some incredible stuff with a great group of pals.

The highlight of the year has been welcoming our daughter Matilda into this strange world and giving Milo a little sister.

After going off grid for a large portion of the year I’m very much looking forward to reconnecting with friends and artists alike and getting the new series painted.

Thanks to everyone who’s shown love and support throughout the years.

My first time showing in NYC was sublime to say the least. The private view was an absolute blur, I still couldn’t say what happened throughout the night other than it was filled with positivity and vibrant energy.

The artwork on show was all to an exceptional level, from drawing, textiles, painting and sculpture. The curation was perfect, every artist getting the right breathing space and complementary works to sit alongside.

I met some lovely people and the highlights were an old friend surprising me at the show after not seeing them for 13 years and legendary artist @albert_diaz1 popping by to check out my work and having a great chat which topped off the night.

I did get chased by a cracked up fiend on crutches, at the end of the night, threatening to kill me which was probably the most NYC way to round it all off.

Well done to all the artists involved, it was a special event indeed.

Huge thanks to my friend @the_urban_framer_ for framing my work beautifully and helping with the shipping.

Exciting news!

My work has been selected for this year’s Chelsea International Fine Art Competition @agoragallery in New York City. I’ll be exhibiting three large paintings from my newest series later this month. The show runs from August 20–27, with the private view on the 21st.

I’ll be flying out (absolutely terrified) on the 20th for four days. If anyone’s in NYC and wants to hang out, give me a shout—I’ll be travelling solo as my wife is very pregnant and can’t fly. Praying that baby stays in the womb while I’m away!

This will be my first time showing work in the US, and I feel incredibly proud to be exhibiting in the same city where so many of my influences come from.
Hoping I can hold it together and not let anxiety get the better of me and enjoy the moment. x
