New carving for the steading at Longniddry.
The Swan is the symbol of @gosford.house and the associated development at Longniddry, this particular swan with its 'beady stare of enlightenment reason' stands over the motto 'Je Pense (forward)' which feels appropriate for the new village which has been developed with the concept of long term stewardship at its heart.

The sculpture will stand in the gable above the new pedestrian access that links the mixed use @longniddrysteading to the village centre.
The last or perhaps penultimate sculpture for the site, a Swan Song as it were!

Back in 2021 For the first phase of the Longniddry development I designed a series of sculptures that tied together the inbuilt habitat boxes with the sculptural program.

My favourite of these was this Scallop shell design.
The scallop felt like a fitting symbol for the function as a shel(l)er as well as relating the Longniddry development to its coastal location.
The design of the piece itself is derived from Edwin Lutyen's scallop vent(?) motif on the Burton Street facade of his Theosophical Society building (6) which I believe is in turn derived from Christopher Wren's own scallop motif window(?) which can be found at the east end of St Pauls cathedral (7). I liked that eventual Wren connection linked it all back to birds.
Closer in time and space is the upturned scallop shells that hide vents on one of my favourite buildings in Edinburgh, the beautiful Adam House, 1953, a late work of classicism William Kininmonth. (8)

The pieces were modelled in clay (9) and cast in glass fibre reinforced concrete with a custom mixed and toned concrete, acid etched to mimic stone (10). These were affixed to swift boxes built into the walls to give the birds houses some kerb appeal which seems to have been appreciated as I've spied a few occupants over the years, Although not by their intended species, however I have few more versions of this concept that im looking to follow up... taken in Longniddry by @jackhandscombe

Monument for the Royal Regiment of Scotland's 20th anniversary.

It has been incredible honour to work with Kenny Hunter on the stone pedestal for his monumental Bronze, unveiled on the 1st of July by King Charles III.

Developed from Kenny's concept, the pedestal is formed from six interlocking stones representing the antecedent regiments, bound together by two keystones. The west keystone bears the Regiment's name and formation date, while the east is carved with the regimental cap badge of a lion Rampant and Saltire.

Having come to Edinburgh where I studied sculpture in the department then headed by Kenny, its been an honour to add to the fabric of the city that has played such a Formative part in my life with a sculptor I have long admired

As you walk around the steading remember to look up as well as around or you may miss the carved stone sculptures that speak both about the history of the site and to its new life at the heart of the community.

Click the link below to read all about their creator Jack Handscombe and keep your eyes peeled for his latest piece that will be placed above the North pend, facing the argyle bridge.

Design for a Brewery and Public House

A study of the 'crown post' truss as a chain tensioned 'floating' collonade, flitch beams triglyphs with reference to the primitive hut petrification theories, and stainless steel giant order Tuscan columns as chimney stacks.
