a shot from one of my favourite sunset missions this year, tracking these emu chicks up into the range as the winter sun set.

We were super lucky this year to see these emu chicks so much - it seemed they had a fully routined circuit that they’d do through town every afternoon before heading up into the range right on sunset. taken in Exmouth, Western Australia by @jackhindle._

last week’s swims with the mantas of Coral Bay, including an epic swim with the famous Freckles.

Freckles is one of the reef’s oldest and most well known resident mantas, estimated to be around 35 years old, and is always so special to swim with. Unfortunately, she returned to the bay a couple of weeks ago with a pretty gnarly injury to her wing tip, most likely from a boat collision.

The crazy thing is this isn’t really rare to see - so much of our marine life on the Ningaloo carry scars or injuries from boat strikes, and many people still don’t seem to learn. We’re honestly pretty lucky that Freckles’ injuries weren’t worse - we could’ve pretty easily lost one of the bay’s biggest icons.

Swims with one of the rarest rays in the ocean - the Ornate eagle ray >

We had a super lucky run of sightings on the Ningaloo last month, with ornates seen on the reef for multiple days in a row. Pretty crazy considering scientists estimate less than 100 confirmed individuals worldwide, and most of us had never seen one before!

A calf humpback playing around by its mother in the gulf during a glassy sunset last week. This guy was spy-hopping and pec slapping for what seemed like ages as we watched from the tinny!

Yesterday on a tinny mission we unfortunately found this entangled humpback struggling right in the shallows behind the reef. It’s a pretty sad sight to see, but the hundred odd sharks surrounding it are a signal to the life that it will bring also. We reported this whale immediately to DBCA, who sent a team out immediately to help, and monitored it from a distance until they were able to get there.

It’s super important in situations like this that you never attempt to disentangle the whale yourself, as it risk the animals chance of a successful rescue and can do more harm than good if the entanglement isn’t properly removed. If you’re on the ningaloo, the best option is to contact Exmouth DBCA (08 9947 8000), Balu Blue (0457 510 820) or the Wildcare Helpline (08 9474 9055) straight away.

Meet one of Ningaloo’s newest leopard sharks, Montana!!

We were lucky enough to swim with this gorgeous female leopard last month, onboard one of our Whaleshark tours at @whalesharkdive . After submitting ID images to @fin_focus we found out it was new to the catalogue, meaning we might’ve been the first to ever see this shark on the reef!

We decided to name this shark Montana, after our epic deckhand last season @the_life_of_mon 🫶.

Sooo stoked to be able to officially name an individual shark here on the ningaloo and contribute a little to one of the incredible projects we have supporting our reef!
