Newburgh Open Studios is proud to present Dark, quiet, moody oil paintings, the works of Jackie Skrzynski.

I make drawings and paintings that dissolve the perceived boundary between humans and nature. I want to complicate the perception of plants and animals as “other” by literally seeing myself within what I depict. My works often describe major life events seen through the lens of nature. They range in size from 5x7 inches to 5x7 feet.
I find the unusual in the everyday visually compelling, especially if it involves overly sentimentalized subjects such as flowers, or nature more broadly. My work offers another perspective that, to me, more accurately reflects the complexity of living.

In a series of short conversations I ask an artist two questions about their work and process.

JACKIE SKRZYNSKI

MH: Your paintings of plants and fungi often read as botanical portraits, and are rooted in the desire to integrate humans with the natural world. What inspires you to depict nature in this way?

JS: My work has often depicted major life transitions seen through the lens of nature. These recent botanical portraits explore my fascination with death and rebirth. I am inspired by a plant when I see something unexpectedly human about it. A petal might look like a tongue, or a fading bloom might suggest the transparency of aging skin. Relating to animals seems straightforward to me, yet I was surprised to observe such recognizably human characteristics in plants. I bear witness to their struggle to emerge and grow, and see grace in their slow decline.

MH: A series of large paintings (in the 50” x 60” range) depicts luscious flowers in their glory, just before they begin to wane. You title this series Shameless, which I find very funny, and I wonder if you introduce humor and overt sensuality to temper the inevitability of decay and death?

JS: I normally do not paint flowers in full bloom, but the countless unfurling petals of peonies are so blatantly sensual, I couldn’t resist. They inspired me because they epitomize shameless revelry, which in their case is quickly followed by total collapse. I wanted to celebrate and capture that drama. I knew the paintings should be relatively big, which was new for me. The larger scale is more assertive than my other paintings. With almost no background, the works become less about the object and more about form, color, and light.

Thank you @chronogram for including my upcoming exhibition, Move into Darkness, @hudsonbeachglass in your list of top exhibitions to see in August. The title of the show comes from a Barry Lopez quote “Real beauty is so deep you have to move into darkness to understand it.”

Just delivered Three Yellow Roses to its new home. Yes, this is an interior wall!
I love how this painting, to me, captures the (erotic) shamelessness of the flowers’ beauty. Form is sensual! I played with color and kinda lost myself inside each curve. Cultivated flowers accentuate traits by design, which reveal our collective, primal desires.

Deep gratitude to this collector for wanting to live with this work, to see it day-to-day. And I can visit! 💚🙏💚
