This year was an unusual one for Finca Sophia @fincasophia . The farm entered the low point of its recurring production cycle, while its extreme altitude makes every harvest highly dependent on the season.

The entire 2026 harvest amounted to just 151 kg, divided into 44 nano lots. Nearly 80 percent of them weighed less than 5 kg. With so little coffee available, dividing it fairly through the usual allocations was almost impossible. Sophia therefore decided not to enter Best of Panama and instead released the entire harvest through a single private auction.

I was supposed to be on vacation when the auction began. I started bidding shortly after I woke up and stayed with it until late that night. It was a long and intense day.

I feel very fortunate that Mazelab Origin @mazelab.origin was able to secure three lots from such a small harvest. I was also trusted by three other brands to bid on their behalf and secured one additional lot for them.

More than anything, I am grateful for the opportunity to work with these coffees. Our responsibility now is to roast each lot with care and represent the work behind it as faithfully as we can. by @jackietrananh

I’ve been hiding this for a long time.

When I first considered creating an immersion version of SOLO, I asked myself one question: should it become a completely separate dripper?

The answer was no.

If the original SOLO was truly well designed, immersion shouldn’t require starting again. It should have been part of the plan from the beginning.

And secretly, it was.

For a long time, I told everyone that the ribs around SOLO were there to keep the dripper balanced. That was true, but it wasn’t the whole story. They were also designed to lock into the silicone immersion base I had always hoped to create.

But as a competitor, I knew the original SOLO was too small for how I wanted to brew in the compulsory round. So I created a new SOLO, taller, larger and made from Tritan.

That is how SOLO SPIN was born. Not as a separate version, but as the next step in a system that had been waiting to reveal itself.

And before asking anyone else to trust it, I used SOLO SPIN on the world stage myself.

I wanted to be the first to prove that it works. by @jackietrananh

FREE YOURSELF

A lesson I’ve learned is simple. Stop making decisions just because you see others doing the same thing. Competitors are there to inspire us, but they should spark curiosity, not become an instruction manual.

Competition recipes are hyper specific. They are dialed in for a particular coffee, roast batch, water, grinder and environment. What works perfectly in that moment is not a universal truth.

Even with every metric, you cannot recreate those conditions. Sometimes, they cannot produce the same cup twice. The bean changes. The environment changes. So do we.

Using the same tools does not automatically make you a better brewer. Each was selected to serve that coffee based on the competitor’s preferences and understanding.

Your choices do not have to be theirs. You already own the most important brewing tool in the world. It is your brain. Use it before buying another dripper, including mine. Ask why, taste the result and notice what changes. Then decide for yourself.

Of course, as someone who designs and sells a dripper, I’m happy when people buy it. I still need to prove to my wife that spending our life insurance money developing it wasn’t crazy.

But I didn’t create this to build a business empire. Business itself does not bring me joy. I create because I love brewing, thinking and bringing things into the world that I believe should exist. I’ve always believed that doing what I love could also help me protect the people I love.

What makes me happy is not a spike in sales. It is seeing someone become a real user who keeps using my dripper because they understand it, enjoy it and know what it helps them achieve. That is when the risk and sleepless nights feel worthwhile. Not because the product is trending, but because it is useful in your hands.

Do not buy a tool because it is popular or follow a recipe without understanding each pour. Stay curious, experiment and adjust. Learn from others, but never hand over your judgment.

Once you stop searching for the "correct" way and begin finding your own, brewing becomes a different experience. You are no longer recreating someone else’s result.

You are creating your own. by @jackietrananh

SOLO SPIN came from the exact same place all my brewing ideas do. Curiosity, hands-on experience, and a relentless desire to understand extraction just a little bit better.

It brings together everything that matters to me in a single brew.

Variable Flow
A gentle rotation lets you perfectly pace your extraction.

Hybrid Brewing
Seamlessly shift between immersion and percolation in a single recipe.

Designed to Feel Right
The larger SOLO Tritan and stable SPIN base are built to feel steady, tactile, and natural in your hands.

Backward Compatible
One SPIN base, two generations. It works flawlessly with both the original SOLO PP and the new, larger SOLO Tritan.

Zero Bypass (The Happy Accident)
A feature discovered along the way. By placing a flat paper filter between the dripper and the SPIN base, you get a slower, and true zero bypass extraction.

I built this by pushing through the same frustrations, endless experiments, and small discoveries that every passionate brewer goes through.

THE SECRET FEATURE I HID FROM THE DAY ONE

Before Solo even launched, I asked myself a question. Why make an immersion version? I wanted ultimate consistency for competition rounds, and a reliable workflow for busy baristas. But I refused to take the lazy route. I didn't want a generic silicone adapter, heavy bypass, or a completely new dripper design.

My goal was simple. One base to rule them all. I wanted you to use what you already own, locking both your original Solo V1 (PP small) and the brand-new Solo V2 (Tritan big) into a single, seamless immersion base.

The secret? The exterior ribs. Everyone thought they were just for leveling the dripper on a server. In reality, they were engineered from day one to act as our locking mechanism. It took months of testing different silicone stiffness levels to get it perfect, but it works flawlessly.

To make the new Solo V2 happen, we went straight to the factory to build a completely new mold from scratch for the premium Tritan material.

The man you see in these photos has been behind every single piece of Solo since the first days. Alongside him are four other vital people behind the scenes. My 3D printing guy, my mold constructors, and my spin mechanism guy.

These five people are the backbone of Solo. They have worked effortlessly to bring this vision to life. I truly hope you love this new evolution. Not just because it is a great new product, but because of the incredible craftsmanship and hard work they poured into it.

The new Solo is dropping very soon in a limited quantity.

Stay tuned!

BEHIND THE SCENES
Before the very first Solo was ever released to the world, I found myself asking a fundamental question. Why should I make an immersion version of the Solo? What is the real purpose behind it?

Back then, I was using the Hario Switch for the compulsory round of competitions because it allowed me to control for ultimate consistency. Immersion brewing is also incredibly practical for specialty cafes. With a solid recipe, baristas can easily and accurately replicate the exact same cup for every customer. These were the core reasons that pushed me to start working on an immersion version.

"Not this time…"

That was the loop playing in my head during that long, quiet pause on stage.

In that moment, I already knew the outcome. I hadn’t lost to anyone else. I had lost to myself, again.

I let the noise get to me. I overlooked the small details I should have respected, and instead of trusting the foundation I had built, I tried to change the ending at the very last moment.

But that is the beautiful and brutal lesson of this chapter.

Sometimes just cry, give the emotions, then laugh and accept it. Learn.

Now looking back, the trophy was never the real prize. The true win was having the right people around me the whole time, and getting to share that moment with my brother @mintedframe .

That was the real destination. The game itself was just a side quest.

Thank you for being part of my path.

February 8, 2025.

That was the day I started working on SOLO Spin, the immersion version of @solodripper .

At the time I honestly was not sure if the idea would work. I kept asking myself many questions. Could an immersion version still carry the true identity of SOLO? Could it offer more control without making the brewing process more complicated? Could the mechanism stay simple, stable and purposeful?

What followed was nearly a year and a half of failing and refining.

And along the way, this journey also led to another idea. Holo, that's a new sensory cup I designed to complete the experience.

The shape of Holo was inspired by a nostalgic part of my childhood. The iconic hồ lô gourd from Journey to the West series. I wanted the cup to carry not only function, but also small piece of where I come from.

Over the past few days in Brussels, I finally had the chance to showcase both SOLO Spin and the Holo cup on the World Brewers Cup stage for the first time, through a full 10min and 12sec routine.

That moment meant a lot to me. Finally being shared with the world.

I'm incredibly grateful to everyone who helped, supported and cheered for me along the way.

SOLO Spin is much more than a new brewer to me.

It represents a long journey of learning, doubt, pressure, patience and ultimately, trusting the process. taken in Brussels, Belgium by @jackietrananh
