It’s taken me 12 years to say this, but I can’t keep it in anymore. On May 11, 2013, during the Marijuana March at Queen’s Park, someone I once called a friend, Phil Patterson, gave me a weed brownie without my consent. I was pressured by people I thought were friends to eat ¾ of it — because “it’s the march, you have to get high.” I laughed, cried, and then passed out on a picnic table. I wore sunglasses, so strangers didn’t notice — but my “friends” did.

Instead of helping me, they put bird seeds on my stomach so pigeons would walk on me, filmed it, and laughed. Ryan O’Rourke posted a humiliating video of me on Facebook. They took me to a taco restaurant and filmed me again while Mexican music played, posted it online for laughs, then deleted it later. I threw up in front of an elderly man at Tim Hortons, slipped my arm in the toilet, and was dragged to Yorkdale Mall still high. On the subway, Ryan kept poking me while I wasn’t in a good state. I was completely vulnerable — and used for entertainment.

When I tried reporting the video, Facebook said it didn’t go against their guidelines. No one truly apologized. Some of the people who laughed in the background were enablers. What they did was wrong. It was manipulative, cruel, and criminal. I could’ve pressed charges. I was made to feel like it was okay — but it wasn’t. If you’ve ever laughed at that video without knowing the full context, ask yourself: how would you feel if it was you?
