Three years ago today, I hatched a plan with my best friend to rescue the friendly stray cat that we fed outside our college apartment. Yesterday, I suddenly had to say goodbye.

Anybody who knows me knows how in love I am with Colby. From the moment I first laid eyes on him we belonged to each other. I’ve grown up with cats all my life, but there was something special about the way he trusted so easily, was gentle with even total strangers, and provided comfort to me during some of the most transitional periods of my life. Coming home from work every day to him is something I hadn’t anticipated living without. Not yet, at least.

I deserved more time, he deserved more time, his brother deserved more time. My apartment is quieter, my heart is in pieces - but how lucky I was to love this tiny fighter so much as to feel his absence this deeply.

Three years was too short, but a million years wouldn’t have been enough either. I love you, Colby - I will speak of you to everyone I meet for the rest of my life. Thank you for choosing me 🧡 by @jackkrsch
