A Saint’s Journey - Jack Lanhardt

A month ago, I had the incredible opportunity to have an original composition of mine be premiered at the Ravinia Festival as part of the Bridges Competition that I was named a winner of, played by a group of some of the most incredible musicians out there. I truly thank everyone involved in this experience for contributing to what I will call one of the most transformative and influential weeks of my life.

Thank you specifically to the three mentors that I and the other composers had that week; Steve Wilson, Billy Childs, and John Clayton. Your words of wisdom have changed us for the better and I sincerely hope to work with you and create with you in the near future.

Thank you also specifically to the incredible ensemble you are currently hearing. It is a privilege and a blessing to have worked with such masterful artistry and I could not have imagined the performance of my piece to be played any more elegantly. I wish you all the best with your artistic endeavors and hope to work with all of you more in the near future.

And finally thank you to my fellow composers. Your minds being put on display at this experience was incredible to see unfold. I have no doubt that you are going to thrive as composers in this industry and change the lives of the people around you. Never stop creating.

I hope you enjoy this and once again, thank you to everyone who was involved in this. God bless you all 🙏🏼❤️

P.S. This piece means a lot to me particularly because it’s the first piece of mine that’s about my Catholic faith that has been publicly performed. If you would like a detailed explanation of it and the themes the piece is expressing, feel free to DM me or ask in the comments. I thank God for this incredible opportunity. taken in Bennett Gordon Hall at Ravinia Festival by @jacklanhardtmusic

The new Two O’ Clock Lab Band album, “Return TWO Paradise”, is out now! You can find 4 of my compositions and arrangements on there including this arrangement I did of a Randy Newman classic, featuring Ava Ramsey! Forever grateful to Rob Parton and the Spring ‘25 and ‘26 bands for beautifully playing these charts. 🙏🏼

Congrats to the band for a great album and congrats to the other composers and arrangers whose music is also featured on this project! Long live big band music! 🎶✨❤️

Unfortunately this announcement comes almost a month late because the notification email went to my spam folder for NO REASON… 🙃

But, nonetheless, I am VERY excited and grateful to announce that I have been named the winner of the 2025 SCI Jazz Composition Award for my piece, “Hello!”, that I wrote for the @twooclocklabband! Thank you so much to @partonrob for asking me to write this piece and allow me to step outside of my comfort zone! 🙏🏼

You can hear this piece on the upcoming Two O’ Clock album, available August 28th! 🕺

From my symphony 🎻✨

My hope with this new style of posting is that if someone hears something interesting in my writing, they can see exactly what’s happening and make their own music from it. Happy writing!
