Early into dating, Nathan told me that when he and a friend had “made it” in Chicago, they celebrated with drinks at the Robey Hotel. With the city skyline in front of you, their rooftop bar makes you feel like the tallest thing for hundreds of midwest miles, making it easy to feel big emotions like pride, love, and excitement for the future.

It was so like him to have such a cool tradition, so I made it a point to continue to celebrate there whenever we could.

When I finally got a great new job, New Years with my parents, birthdays, and sometimes, just to feel fancy. That is why I thought it was the perfect place to ask him to marry me.

The beach on a Monday is quiet.
Sitting alone alone among spare people,
nestled between seagulls

In the center of a U,
like an eye of a storm.

All around me sits tall, towering structures jutting from green.

They look spotted, and incredibly like Legos.
Square, boxy things.
I can’t imagine there’s much in them.

Today’s been one giant series of unfortunate events, I tell the seagulls.
Someone tried to seal Nathan’s moped.
Jammed a screwdriver into the ignition and breaking the auto lock so that now he can’t turn right.
My bike was covered in bird shit.
I forgot my bike lock key.

Every street I took was the wrong one.
Plowing forward, knowing all I have to do is go east.

For all my forethought and initiative of finding myself at the beach today, I forgot my towel.

O sand,
and grassy plain,
and seagulls,
and strangers.
I’ll try to laugh,
as I dive,
head first into cool blue.

I finished a notebook.

Me.
I did it.

It traveled with me to a dozen parks.
A collection of solo dinners at restaurants.
It sat at the bottom of my backpack and found its way out to rest on my bedroom shelf, over and over again, too many times to count.

It’s stained. Even on the very first page.
It contains 3 different ink colors, and switches randomly to smudging pencil at points.

It’s illegible to most people who haven’t read my handwriting for years.

A few select pages were cheatedly ripped out with finality.
The last page was used upside down for Italian conjugations and a to-do list.
The front is a wireframe drawing for an app I wanted to develop to help you find events and restaurants in your city.

Between these two ends is a year and two months, to the day, of my life.

The front says my name on it.

A phone number under it in case it ever got lost, and an address I don’t live at anymore. by @jackmcgreal
