A wall was built, sealing off access to a large field which local residents had turned into an informal community garden in Chengdu, China. In my neighborhood in China, locals turned a construction site into a farmland. 🥕

But the rumor is that construction is starting tomorrow and it’s all going to be knocked down. With guidance from my Uncle He, I hope to plant some water spinach before it’s too late.

“I don’t care, you’re hungry” 😭 A family of the Zhuang ethnic minority offered me some water, and then a meal during my biking trip through rural Guangxi.

Their village had 15 homes and was located way off the main road in the mountains. “Standard Mandarin didn’t exist” when the parents were growing up, as in it hadn’t yet been established as China’s official language or fully implemented in schools.

As Zhuang people, they grew up speaking their own language, which is more closely related to Thai. They learned Mandarin later in life, through watching TV.
