To most he was Gerry, or Mr. O, but to me he was Dad.

Humble, selfless, devoted, smart, funny, authentic, kind, and loving, are just a few of the many words I’d use to describe my dad. He was able to make everyone he spoke to crack a smile and feel special. It didn’t matter who you were, he never held himself above anyone else, and it was rare to see him ever talking about his many accomplishments.

He was a simple man, most nights after his cup of Irish tea, you could find him kicked back in his recliner eating a “sliver” of apple pie and ice cream watching Philly sports. Once he was finished often times he’d say, “Jack O, feel the weight of that” in other words, take my plate.

It’s the little things that I’ll miss most about my dad. Often times I felt like I was my dad’s right hand man. From a young age, up until now, I found myself helping him pull weeds, shovel snow, fix toilets, replace windows, move furniture, power wash, start fires, fix bikes, hang Christmas lights, the list goes on. From a young age I knew my dad didn’t plan on paying someone to do something he knew we could do ourselves. Especially not if it was something we could do together. He taught me how to be intentional, and how to use my time to be with those that I love, even if it meant doing chores with one another.

I could go on and on about the ways he impacted not only myself, but all of those whom he surrounded himself with. I hope to be half the man he was. He is my role model. Happy birthday Dad 🍻 Love you ❤️ by @jackoreiilly
