The exact spot where Sikkim was born. 🏔️✨

If you track down a quiet, pine-shadowed park in Yuksom, you’ll find this simple stone platform. It doesn’t look like a typical royal seat, but in 1642, history was made right here.

Three wise monks met at this very spot and crowned Phuntsog Namgyal as the first Chogyal (King) of Sikkim. That single event united the local tribes, established Yuksom as the first capital, and marked the official birth of Sikkim as a kingdom.

Right across from the throne stands the Norbugang Chorten—a sacred stupa built using soil and stones collected from every single corner of the region to symbolize absolute unity.

Hidden away until the 1900s, this perennial powerhouse springs directly from the glaciers of the world’s third-highest peak. 🏔️💧

Standing at the base of Kanchenjunga Falls, one doesn’t just see the water—one feels the thunderous roar and the cold mountain mist hitting the face instantly. It’s an absolute sensory overload hearing it crash down 100 feet over these massive, moss-covered boulders.

Sikkim’s lost medieval capital hidden inside a jungle. 🏰🌲

To understand the true soul of Sikkim, you have to look past the snow peaks and walk into this dense chestnut forest near Pelling.

Welcome to the Rabdentse Ruins. Today, it looks like a beautifully manicured, peaceful maze of stone walls, but from 1670 to 1814, this absolute cliffside was the thriving, high-altitude beating heart of the Kingdom of Sikkim.

A Quick History Lesson:
👑 It was established as the second capital of Sikkim by the second Chogyal (King), Tensung Namgyal.
⚔️ Living here wasn’t easy. Because of its location, the kingdom faced constant invasions. In the late 18th century, the Gurkha army from Nepal invaded, ran a brutal siege, and completely destroyed the palace complex, reducing it to the stone foundations we see today.
👑 Eventually, the capital had to be shifted to Tumlong because this site was too battered to rebuild.

The Vibe Today:
To get here, you have to take a stunning, misty 15-20 minute walk through a deep canopy of oak and chestnut trees (passing prayer flags and the Sidkeong Tulku Bird Park on your way).

When the forest suddenly opens up, you are greeted by these massive, structural stone blocks sitting right on the edge of a ridge. Stand near the three chortens (sacred stone monuments) where the royal family used to offer prayers, look down, and you’ll see a sheer drop into the deep valley below.

If you are a history buff, a solo explorer, or just love places where nature is slowly reclaiming human history, put this on your absolute bucket list. It’s wild to think that standing right where these quiet ruins sit, kings used to make decisions that shaped the geography of the Himalayas. 🏔️📜

A hidden paradise for bird lovers in West Sikkim. 🦜🏔️

Right next to the Rabdentse Ruins, I stumbled upon the Sidkeong Tulku Bird Park—and it felt like walking directly into a living, breathing jungle canopy.

This park is an incredible walk-in aviary built right over a natural forested valley. Instead of staring through small cages, you walk along an elevated bridge while exotic, vibrant birds fly completely free all around and above you.

The air here is thick with a symphony of different bird calls, whistles, and the constant rustle of wings in the trees. If you’re traveling through Pelling or Geyzing, do not skip this place. It’s easily one of the most peaceful, well-maintained conservation spaces I’ve seen on the entire loop. 🌲✨
