For much of his life, Jackson’s journey was defined by questions without answers.

He was eventually diagnosed with SYNGAP1-related disorder, a rare genetic condition that causes autism, intellectual disability, epilepsy, and developmental challenges. Like many families, we spent years searching for explanations, therapies, and ways to help him reach his potential.

Through EEGs and other evaluations, research happens to better understand SYNGAP1 and related neurodevelopmental disorders.

Research is not always easy for our families. It requires travel, patience, and trust. But every visit, every assessment, and every data point brings us one step closer to better treatments and a brighter future.

He may not know the impact he is making, but he is helping pave the way for generations of children and adults who will follow.

Understanding the difference between SYNGAP1 and autism is key to recognizing the unique challenges each can present: SYNGAP1 is a gene-mutations in this gene can lead to a specific neurodevelopmental disorder.

Children with SYNGAP1 mutations may experience developmental delays, seizures, and behaviors that sometimes overlap with autism.

AUTISM is a behavioral diagnosis defined by differences in social communication, interaction, and repetitive behaviors. It doesn’t have one single genetic cause and can stem from a variety of genetic and environmental factors.

While some children with SYNGAP1 mutations might also meet the criteria for an autism diagnosis, it’s important to remember that SYNGAP1 is just one piece of a much larger neurodevelopmental puzzle.

Food struggles and autism go hand in hand and unless you’ve lived it, you truly don’t understand how hard it is. Everywhere we turn, we’re told

“No gluten. No sugar. No soy. No dairy. No carbs.”

The list goes on. it’s hard to get autistic kids to try new foods.

Sensory issues, texture aversions, rigidity, and anxiety around meals are very real.Jackson’s food journey hasn’t been easy. Between ages 3-7, we were in constant talks about placing a G-tube just to keep him nourished.

We never gave up, we kept offering, exposing, and celebrating even the tiniest bite of something new.Now, 8 years later, he eats a small list of foods. None of them are green. Some are healthy. Some are not. And that’s okay.We’re doing our best. So please, stop judging parents for something you know nothing about.

This journey is about survival, not perfection.
