I could never be convinced that Barley, my BFF of 15 years, is not simply the best pup ever, that she was not divinely sent into our lives or that she is not a soulmate of mine.

15 years ago some trash human dumped her and her siblings at, probably in, a river when they were born. Some kind humans found them and turned them in to the @nehumanesociety where some other kind human fostered her litter for a number of weeks until they could go up for adoption.

✨In a serendipitous moment that I’ve always loved - I knew I was naming her Barley while I was filling out the paperwork. Next to Jackson & I, a family was filling out their paperwork to take her sister home and they told me they had named her Harley 💞

I adopted her in September, when they guessed she was about 8 weeks old and since we had no real info on her but Birthdays are important to me, I decided to go back 8 weeks and set that July 24th was her Birthday. We’ve celebrated it as such every year since.

Barley loves everything I love and most of all she just loves being with us. There is never a time when she’s not by my side. She is patient and tolerant, chillllll and she loves everyone. She can swim but hates it but if on the water is where I’m going, that’s where she’s going, too. She’s my passenger princess, my ever loyal very best friend and I love her with my whole heart and then some.

At 15, with some heart issues, nearly deaf and mostly blind — I know we’re on borrowed time together. Having suffered a profound loss recently, I can say with certainty that I am not now nor will I ever be ready to lose her and my heart is so full on the days she still plays like a puppy, which thankfully, are still more days than not 💖

If you have the means to bring a doggo into your life, I hope SOOO much that you choose to adopt. Barley has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and a blessing at every turn. She has improved our lives every day that she’s been in them. I could not love her more and my wish for you, on her 15th Birthday, is that you find the same in a shelter or rescue dog of your own 🖤

This is 9 year old me in 1990 on the steps leading up to the @buenavistauniversity Arch that all students symbolically walk in through as Freshman and then back out of after they graduate, with my 54 year old Grandma who went back to school to earn her degree after a painful divorce, raising her 6 kids + me on her own and surviving cancer and it’s made so much more special to me because just last fall, my son, her first great-grandchild, walked under that same arch to start his next chapter of life 😭 When I say she was the strongest person I’ve ever known, this is the kind of stuff I’m talking about.

The next graduate I stand hand-in-hand with on those steps will be my son, @jackson_mulkins, and I just can’t tell you how special that is to me or how proud that makes me ♥️ taken in Buena Vista University by @jackson_mulkins

Another @drakerelays is in the books for @jackson_mulkins and his team! Each meet is a little more emotional for me than the last and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a little teary eyed waking away from the stadium today. I know this is a post about a track team and speed, lol, but why does this time have to go by so fast!?!

Qualifying and running in THEEE #drakerelays is a big deal and a special thing and I’m so proud of Jackson and his whole team. Watching these guys compete is one of my favorite things!

Great season so far guys! Keep it up!!
