I’m super stoked to announce my commitment to further my academic and athletic career at Duke University! I want to thank God, all of my coaches, family, and teammates for supporting me until this point for none of this would be possible without them. I would also like to thank the entirety of the Duke coaching staff for giving me an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I can’t wait for the next 4 years in Durham and can’t wait to get to work next fall. I’m incredibly excited to be apart of the Blue Devil family. For the first time, but definitely not the last, go Blue DevilsšŸ”µšŸ˜ˆ! #committed #duke #bluedevils by @jacksonheidesch

Duke Runner Jackson Heidesch On Training Your Brain to Deal With The Pain
Ā
Tune in Wednesday May 7 on The Mindset ExperienceĀ® sponsored by The Hidden OpponentĀ
Ā
Jackson Heidesch is a sophomore on the Duke Cross Country and Track and Field teams. Hailing from Iowa, Jackson first made national headlines by winning the NXR Heartland Regional in 2022, earning the nickname ā€œThe King of Iowaā€ from The Running Effect. His momentum carried into a historic 2023 season: he won the mile at New Balance Indoor Nationals, shattered the coveted 4-minute mile barrier at the HOKA Festival of Miles, and captured victory at the prestigious Brooks PR Invitational.
Ā
Following his historic senior year, Jackson has faced a series of injuries that sidelined him for much of his freshman and sophomore seasons at Duke. The physical setbacks were compounded by mental health challenges, as he battled depression that turned training into dread and everyday life into a struggle. Through it all, Jackson discovered a deeper resilience, sharing openly about his experiences with therapy, medication, and the slow, patient process of rebuilding his love for running.
Ā
Now redshirted and healthier, Jackson has embraced a broader mission: to speak out on the importance of mental health in athletics. Whether competing at the highest level or advocating for mental health awareness, Jackson Heidesch is committed to making a lasting impact both on and off the track. His journey is one of resilience, community, and a relentless belief in moving forward—no matter how difficult the path may be.

The journey of Jackson Heidesch is one of unbridled honesty and crushing heartbreak.

From high school standout to oft-injured Duke student-athlete, Jackson Heidesch has been forced to deal with more than just physical maladies.Ā Ā

It’s been 18 months of toil, rehab and bouts of depression for the Iowa native, who is now opening up about his mental health struggles. Jackson will be taking a designated pause from the NCAA to redshirt the entire indoor and outdoor season.Ā

Although he’s been through ringer in his short running career, he seems to be setting the stage for a resurgence on and off the track and grass.

Jackson’s hardships since agreeing to run for Duke include a couple of grade 4 stress fractures; mono, and the aforementioned depression. With a combination of family support and talk therapy, in addition to physical therapy work–Jackson has come out the other side of this dark tunnel ready to get back to logging miles and competing with the best in the country.Ā

Jackson was the 2022-23 Gatorade Boys Cross Country Player of the Year for Iowa, where he broke the 4 minute mile barrier to break the state record, running a 3:59.08 at the HOKA Festival of Miles. That year he also swept the 1600m and 3200m titles at the state meet, running a 4:07.28 and a 9:08.86, respectively.Ā

In today’s conversation,Ā Jackson takes me through his past two years of ups and downs, how he became aware of his mental health, his plans going into the future, and so much more.

This one is deep, raw, emotional, take the time to be blessed by Jackson’s vulnerability and share with someone you know.

I wanted to share my story not only to serve as an update on my life, but more as a testament to the importance of mental health. Mental health can be so easy to hide and that’s what makes it so scary. I went months struggling all by myself, faking being okay to my closest friends and loved ones.

I hope this post can serve as a reminder to check in on your friends, family, or anyone who’s close to you in your life. It took me a year long battle with depression to realize it but I know it’s something I’m not going to overlook in the future. by @jacksonheidesch

1 year ago today, June 1st, 2023, I became the 20th high school boy ever to break 4 minutes in the mile and 10th fastest high school boy to ever run the mile. Fast forward a year later and you would find me struggling on my three mile jog this morning.

This last year has been one of the hardest years I’ve ever had to go through, not only physically but mentally as well. From a grade 4 tibial stress fracture and mono in the fall to a grade 4 sacral stress fracture this spring, I often found myself wondering what the hell was happening to me. I felt cursed. I felt like I was just getting knocked down over and over again. I couldn’t catch a break. There was only one way to describe the emotion I felt in the fall after the first stress fracture: heartbroken. I had the thing I love most in this world stripped away from me for 12 weeks. It was a total gut-punch.

Thankfully I was able to get healthy again after my first stress fracture and return to running healthy again due to the amazing care I received from both my trainers and doctors. However, even though I was given the ability to run again, something felt off. My love for the sport just wasn’t there. I could feel it on runs and workouts and even just overall, I could feel something was off. I don’t think I truly realized what I was going through until a couple months after the fact but I was going through a complete identity crisis. I lost my love for running and honestly just wondered what my purpose even was.

Running has always been such a big piece of my identity that as soon as it was stripped away from me, I lost myself and even after running was returned to me, I still felt lost. Runs and workouts seemed pointless and I often found myself wondering why I even continued to keep running….. by @jacksonheidesch
