This is the whole reason I have a job. The cohos are here. A month late, but they’re here. 3-4 years ago, the Deer Lake crew managed to raise some good salmon, and send them down to the ocean, which is no easy task. The whole purpose of which is to achieve photos like this whether it’s me holding the salmon, or a happy bear, eagle, commercial fisherman, or forest floor.

Humans are scary, but salmon is tasty.

The thought of constantly crossing paths with brown bears was terrifying at first, but they really do seem to understand and respect boundaries. 99% of the time, they want nothing to do with us. I’ve only seen 3 types of reactions so far

1. They run away

2. They show indifference, and keep fishing

3. They show a sense of curiosity in us, usually from the cubs

Although most interactions are peaceful, we have to always be ready for a 4th type of reaction. by @jackwalterfox

Back in the early summer, I bypassed the alarm clock and woke up to the sounds of a humpback whale feasting on our smolts.

I usually take my coffee black, but I was happy to take it with a side of whale watching that day by @jackwalterfox

The bears use this creek like a drive-thru

Sometimes, a bear will catch his salmon, and then catch an extra salmon for the bear in line behind him as a way to ‘pay it forward.’

The first bear will then quickly run to the back of the line and order 55 salmon 55 cod, 55 scallops, 100 halibut, 100 crabs, 100 rock fish, and a 155 skunk cabbage roots.

The second bear will then show up to the creek where a freshly caught salmon is waiting for him. He will then have to catch 55 salmon 55 cod, 55 scallops, 100 halibut, 100 crabs, 100 rock fish, and a 155 skunk cabbage roots because the bear in front of him paid it forward.

These bears are smarter than we give them credit for.
