POSTS STORIES REELS

Grimdark is a subgenre that just feels...so real to me. Magic and monsters aside, the characters in these stories are broken, often doing the most vile things in order to survive, for power, for love, or simply because they're sadistic. To me, there isn't really a genre out there that truly captures the full breadth of what it is to be human quite the way these stories do. There is a darkness within us all; some are just better at hiding it than others.

I'd like to thank each and every one of these authors, and all the rest I didn't mention here. You've showed me just how beautifully dark storytelling can be. Truly, thank you for all your hard work. Writing can be I guess a bit...grimdark.

Here are a few reads that have been sitting in my TBR for a while. These hidden gems have been popping up all over my social media and getting recommended to me, especially on here. I love it. Always willing to give a new author a shot. (And yes, I have to have the dramatic music on every post.)

My laptop, where the magic happens. I always write to a somber soundtrack, often with haunting violin or piano. What do you listen to while you work? (And yes there is an HP symbol hidden under that Targaryen dragon.)

For this book stack I made a collection of primary world dark fiction. Whether it's lycanthropes mauling people during the crusades, or warlocks waging a secret shadow war, there is something uniquely disturbing about the supernatural invading our real world history. This is where horror and fantasy often bleed together.

Here's a carousel to add to your TBR, where the paranormal invades our world.

Weird west has been pulling me in lately. The combination of outlaws, magic, cults, and demons makes it the ultimate genre-bending sandbox. It's the perfect playground to experiment with, and I've been channeling this kind of energy into my own writing, including trying my hand at the genre itself. Have to work my way through most of these of course, but I'm looking forward to it.

Have you read any of these? What recommendations do you have?

Horror books you need to add to your TBR!

A lot of these are on my TBR. Though I did read Last Days which freaked me out, and The Troop made me feel sick to my stomach. Horror is one of those genres that I've pretty much always been drawn to, even as a kid. I remember staying up late watching god awful Syfy Channel movies, but at least they got me interested in this type of storytelling.

When I write now I find myself adding in elements of horror into just about everything. Even when I don't mean to I find little bits of it scattered throughout.

Which of these are on your TBR? What books are missing that you love? Let me know!

3-3-3-3 Challenge 📖

Finished up my reads for last week, onto some new books. And yes I know I was supposed to read Starship Troopers this week...but I was feeling dinosaurs over giant bugs. Got shuffled back into my gigantic TBR pile.

What are you guys reading? Let me know!

Dark fantasy to add to your TBR! 🗡️🩸

There's nothing better than finishing a book or series and craving something that'll scratch that same itch. Finding that same sort of vibe can be really tough, so I've paired books that I think you guys might like to the best of my ability.

These books have shown me how to take broken people and make them someone you can root for. No one is ever all good, or all bad, it's what makes us human. And not so coincidentally a compelling read. It's the exact kind of messy character work I'm building into my stories right now.

Which other pairings would you make? Let me know so I can add them to my TBR.

Gritty scifi you need to add to your TBR! 🩸

Save this post for the next time you need a genuinely dark, unapologetically brutal sci-fi read. Which ones did I miss? Drop your favorites in the comments so I can add them to my TBR!

The ultimate lore library for gamers and tabletop players. 🗡️ ⚙️

Gaming has created some of the largest, most visceral worlds in fiction. The lore inside these books and games gave rise to some of the most iconic characters and beloved settings in pop culture today. These 12 books hit as hard as the games themselves, proving that some universes are simply too massive, too brutal, or too rich to be contained on a screen.

What did I miss?
Let me know which ones I left off so I can add them to my TBR!

10 Fantasy Books the Internet refuses to let me ignore! ⚔️

These are some books I'm constantly recommended. I see them popping up all over social media and on Amazon. I finally caved and added them to my TBR (which is massive at this point). I broke them down by vibes and tropes based on what everyone's been saying about them.

Tell me, what books keep popping up wherever you look?
