A Means of Escape - Ink and graphite on A4 Fifteen swallows ache to return to their threads. There lies an open window, a means of escape - a chance to find freedom! They disperse throughout the city. The air is heavy. One swallow stumbles and falls, the rest follow, dropping in rhythm with the rain. The city hasn’t yet learnt to numb its pain. by @jacobcantread

Located in the Niigata prefecture of Japan, far north of Tokyo, Koshirakura is a remote village that wields the most beautiful shades of green I have ever seen. Reeds, folding chairs, rice fields, plastic tarps, and of course - kiwis. The landscape workshop was a swift kinetic movement of these different shades of green - much like a curtain reveal at a theatre or the blur of a bullet train passing by. Constant movement and action ripped us 30 or so individuals away from daily life, connection, and cyclical activity. We ate, slept, worked, and most importantly celebrated together - whether that was outside on the smoking bench or at the Momijihiki maple tree cutting festival, acts of celebration frequently scattered the school grounds. A group of us sat outside on the timber benches - one of them poorly balanced, causing it to rock back and forth as people sat and stood. Chain smoking cigarettes (a ritual that was quickly developed), we are discussing our ‘rose’ ‘thorn’ and ‘bud’ of the current day. The mix of cultures, ages, personalities, and humor is what really made koshirakura special. Sometimes it’s good to go into things blind, with your head turned slightly to the side by @jacobcantread
