No one told me the differences between Bali proper and Lombok…

… what waited for us on the other side was shocking.

Ok for real though, know that I have your attention, if you’re planning a trip to Indonesia you NEED to know these key differences...

Here’s 5 things to expect once you step foot onto Lombok soil:

1️⃣Bali is optimized for tourism. Lombok not as much. In both you can find a modern Starbucks💀Lombok is trailing Bali in over-tourism slightly, but give her a few years and she’ll get there

2️⃣Bali traffic measures distance in time. Lombok measures it in kilometers. A 10km journey in southern Bali can easily become 45 minutes to an hour during busy periods.

In Lombok, 10km often actually means 10-15 minutes. We found Lombok to be a JOY to drive in. Yes, everything is still a drive away, even to a restaurant because it’s not walkable at all really, but the roads are NICE. Infrastructure is getting there👏

3️⃣Bali is busy even in paradise. Lombok still delivers moments of genuine emptiness. In Bali, you will rarely (if ever, now in 2026) find yourself completely alone on a beach near the major tourist areas.

In Lombok, you can still pull over your scooter, walk for five minutes, and find stretches of coastline with more cows than people.

4️⃣Bali feels international. Lombok feels Indonesian. Large parts of southern Bali can sometimes feel like a mashup of Australia, Russia, Europe, and California that happens to be located in Indonesia.

Lombok feels more connected to local rhythms, local communities, and local culture. The dominant culture also shifts from predominantly Balinese Hindu traditions to the largely Muslim culture of the indigenous Sasak people population, which visitors notice through architecture, dress, and the call to prayer 5X PER DAY STARTING AT 5AM, it was gorgeous.

5️⃣Bali sells aspiration. Lombok sells space. Bali often feels like a place people come to become a different version of themselves: surfer, founder, yogi, creator, DJ, digital nomad.

Lombok is more of a place people come to disappear for a while.

Less networking.
Less optimizing.
More ocean.
More silence.

i made $18,410 in june 2026. and they were worth every cent.

🎫: $14,000
🌐 the web (all my ventures and startups combined): $0
📈 stocks (thank you, pre ipo spacex): $4,410

✂️ margins: quite low

that’s the money scoreboard. but about real life:

12 dives. 15 surfs between canggu and uluwatu. one ferry. learned to drive a scooter. 3 therapy sessions and almost as many little breakdowns to match.

and the thing i can’t stop thinking about: i started dreaming again. it had been two years.

met incredible people. saw a shark. saw octopuses, slowly falling for indonesia. still no bali belly.

yes yes : autocomp, cutroll, dinnerelite: all live, all still at zero, but hopefully changing soon

yep, the guy in white is me

between the australians, brazilians, californians, europeans, asians and locals,

i think we’ve all travelled thousands of miles to successfully recreate the exact same crowding problems we were trying to escape back home

don’t get me wrong, i’ve had some surprisingly empty sessions here

and most lineups are actually pretty friendly

but bali might have the highest concentration of people convinced they’re the main character

(myself included)

don’t worry though, i still caught 28 waves this session

Motivation is hard to find sometimes, especially when you’re staring at a tough workout and just want to stay in bed. Honestly there are days when I would much rather do anything other than run, but then I remember how lucky I am to be with someone who is a total catch. Knowing that my girlfriend is a 12/10 honestly keeps me honest and makes me want to be the best version of myself for her every single day. It sounds kind of silly but having that extra push really helps get me out the door and onto the trail. Whether you have someone like that or you’re just doing it for yourself, just find that one thing that makes you want to get moving. Consistency is the only way to see results so keep showing up even when you don’t feel like it.
