ā€œAmerican Rural, Signsā€ — another from my new series.

At first glance: a lone road sign, a bare tree, and a path cutting off toward nowhere. But like many of these works, this one carries layered meaning.

The sign reads Still Meadow Road — pointing toward a red, lifeless tree. To me, both tree and road are signs of the Cross. The road, though not pictured fully, implies a meeting at the crossroads. In Scripture, Christ is often described as ā€œhung on a tree.ā€

The sign, the tree, the road — they form a trinity of symbols. A quiet call to responsibility, even suffering. A path that leads, ultimately, to stillness.

There’s another layer here: digital influence. I build all my color compositions digitally before painting. It began as a practical step — playing with color in drawing apps — but it’s become part of the visual language.

Though this work is 100% analog — hand-painted, hand-mixed — there’s a digital residue in the exaggerated palette. It’s like the digital world left its fingerprint on the landscape.

That tension — between the old and the new, the sacred and the synthetic — runs deep in this series.

I don’t think AI will ever replace true creativity. It can’t generate the prompt, only respond. Ironically, I’m using AI to help shape this caption — just like I use digital sketches to shape analog paintings. Maybe that’s the real sign of our times.

What do you think — can digital tools deepen, rather than dilute, our creativity? taken in Seguin, Texas by @jacobspacek

Jacob Spacek’s American Rural series captures moments of stillness—quiet, familiar structures set against a hush of open land—but he flips the volume with intensely saturated color. The result is a striking tension: calm rural scenes that hum with energy, making them a perfect fit for Chroma.

Jacob likes working BIG, and these pieces don’t hold back.
ā€œCisternā€ measures an impressive 76ā€ x 74ā€, while ā€œGleaningā€ comes in at 36ā€ x 45ā€ā€”paintings that command space and reward close looking. While photos hint at their beauty, the scale, texture, and color relationships truly come alive in person.

Join us on opening night of CHROMA at The Art Lounge on South Padre Island, Feb 7, 7-9 PM and experience these powerful works the way they’re meant to be seen.

Jacob Spacek (b. 1986) is a contemporary painter based in Seguin, Texas. A graduate of Texas State University, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on painting.
Raised in rural Adkins, Texas, nestled in the sand hills southeast of San Antonio, Spacek returned to the region after more than a decade in Houston. Here, the familiar terrain, rolling landscapes, weathered machinery, and sun-beaten relics reignited his creative vision.
Today, his American Rural series reflects that return: a synthesis of personal faith, memory, and craftsmanship. Through simplified geometry, exaggerated color, and quiet symbolism, Spacek transforms rural relics into contemplative meditations on endurance, transcendence, and the sacred within the ordinary.

ā€œThis piece is part of a larger series that explores the quiet authority of rural American structures—objects that exist without spectacle yet carry the weight of memory, labor, and time. Water tanks, fences, silos, and signage become forms that hold a kind of cultural residue and also as symbols to be decoded. These are elements of the landscape that are often overlooked, yet they shape the visual and emotional character of the environments they inhabit. This one began with reference photos taken just off of I-35 on the way back from Laredo. Everything there felt quiet, slower, and forgotten. The disheveled house, remnants of a shed, and a sign post which said nothing and pointed nowhere grabbed my attention. There was no clear focal point, no real activity, just a grouping of things that felt like they had been left behind but not fully abandoned. The sign sits at the center, but it doesn’t do anything. It’s still standin by @jacobspacek

If you’re in Houston for Untitled Art Fair, stop by @reevesgallery and check out my new work. I’ve got about 10 new pieces hanging over there right now.

Check out the Ol’ Break-up Truck for scale. This is one of my favorites of this new body of work. by @jacobspacek

I found these two shed in disrepair in an overgrown field on a cross road from 35 while on the way back from Laredo. The sign on the post with no message, only a torn remnant of a paper spoke to me. The cactus-like sago palms lean on it, looking for support as if in search of a word of meaning. Orange wire whips between the palms and the sign linking them together in suffering under the hot Texas sun. by @jacobspacek

There’s this old trailer down the street from my house. It’s captivating. Its new purpose points to ingenuity. Rebirth. A surprising second chance. A change in its nature. A new mission. What previously carried supplies, now guides people. Will you follow the sign? by @jacobspacek

Good times last week at @theinfrathin artist residency. While searching for imagery to continue my current body of work, I got some R&R, swam in the Frio River, connected with some fellow artists, and started a new painting, and taught some local youths about printmaking. Thanks to all the artists and to @theinnbetweentx for hosting us. It was an honor. by @jacobspacek

This was the second painting I did in this series and I learned a ton during the process. I start each painting with a well refined color study as a solid plan to follow—but the real work happened in the chaos of painting. Scroll right to see how I built up layers of color and shape, trusting my instincts.

I even had this beautifully painted cactus in the lower right corner—I loved it—but had to let it go. I don't have a picture showing how it was painted, but it pulled too much attention. It was tough, there was some magic in the painting of that cactus. But that’s part of the game: edit ruthlessly. Make choices. Evolve. Ultimately deciding to let go of that cactus has helped immensely with the work ever since.

The biggest takeaway? You can plan all you want, but once you're in it, you’ve gotta trust your gut. Let your early color choices speak. Let the painting tell you what it needs, and when all else fails, don't be afraid to ask for help from trusted friend.

Special thanks to David, @hardakerstudio for all his help in getting this body of work started. Go give him a follow if you haven't already. Anyway, I had been thinking of starting this series for a while, but his encouragement tipped me over the edge to get started. He was also kind enough to help guide the work in the early stages of this series when I wasn't quite sure what these paintings were supposed to be.

Just like life—start with a map, but don’t be afraid to go off-road when the terrain changes. 🤘

More new work! "American Rural, Cistern." Three metal tanks set against the vibrant South Texas landscape, reflecting the resilience and enduring spirit of rural Texas. I've been obsessing over color and shape in this new body of work. The colors and imagery are inspired by my deep connection to this part of Texas. Both to how I remember this area and these objects growing up and the strange and bittersweet sense of longing I experience as I slowly witness their replacement with new equipment or, more likely, model homes.
