I’m not a religious man, but I do have a God of my understanding, a belief system, an idea of something bigger than myself. I wanted to see if I could turn that idea into something visual. That’s a difficult thing to do, so I stopped trying to control the painting and simply followed it, letting the image unfold.

“What Does God Look Like?” will be on view at my upcoming show, LUCID, at The Loft @ Dacha Beer Garden in Washington D.C. by @jacobthomasart

I was talking with another artist the other day about repeating what I’m doing, and I realized something: I don’t really care what the public thinks of it.

I can’t create with dollar signs leading the way. At some point, I have to give in to the desire to make the thing I want to make and have blind faith that there’s a reason I’m being pulled in that direction. Maybe it will lead somewhere. Maybe it will unlock something I didn’t even know needed unlocking.

I think artists can too easily mistake a small sample of feedback for the truth. You post something, get a thousand likes, a handful of comments, maybe some criticism, and suddenly you start thinking you’ve been given an objective measurement of whether the work matters.

But there are billions of people in the world who have no idea who you are or what you’re making. Some of them might absolutely lose their minds over the thing you’re being told doesn’t work.

It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone other than you.

Your time is the most valuable resource you have. You spend it making things, and once that time is gone, you don’t get it back.

So whether it will sell, whether it will be popular, whether people will understand it, whether the algorithm likes it, whether it makes sense to anyone else… all of that comes later.

The first question I ask myself is much simpler:

Do I want this to exist?

It starts there.

Once I answer that, I can figure out the rest of the journey. by @jacobthomasart
