*OPENING THIS SUNDAY*

Jacqueline Poncelet
In Translation

20 September – 3 October 2026

Opening event Sunday 20 September 2pm- 4pm

MOCA London presents In Translation, a new tapestry by Jacqueline Poncelet, realised in collaboration with master weaver Caron Penney of Atelier Weftfaced. The exhibition brings together the finished tapestry with the original watercolour on paper (64 x 84 cm) from which it was developed, inviting visitors to consider how an artwork changes as it moves from one medium to another.

The two formed a working friendship that produced Poncelet’s new work In Translation (01). Over the period of a year Poncelet monitored the delicate process of first making the thread that would be woven (up to three threads of different colours of fine wool twisted together into a thicker one that could be woven). Originally Poncelet wanted to use a section of her larger watercolour collage that included a white ragged seam (the torn edge of one piece of paper against another field of watercolour) but this proved to be too dominant within the composition. So Poncelet shifted her focus in the drawing to a smaller rectangle that was then used as the cartoon for the final work.

Viewers at MOCA London will be able to see the final woven work and the original collage and see for themselves how close to the original the woollen translation is. But it is just that, a translation, not of the whole work by Poncelet, but a tight visual selection that she made. Penney began by translating the work into a cartoon at a larger scale, that might then be translated into wool. In each step away from the original Poncelet had to keep the feel of the watercolour at the core of the process and the outcomes.

Water itself has become her latest translation collaborator.

OPENING EVENT ‘IN TRANSLATION’

I’m very pleased to be part of Jacqueline Poncelet’s exhibition In Translation, opening this Sunday at MOCA London.

The exhibition brings together Jacqueline’s original watercolour and In Translation (01), the tapestry I created in collaboration with Jacqueline, exploring what happens when an image moves from one medium into another.

It has been a fascinating process of looking closely at Jacqueline’s work and finding a way to translate it into tapestry - not simply reproducing the image, but responding to it through colour, structure, yarn and the physical act of weaving.

The exhibition will also include a new installation of ‘Other Cosmologies’, with Jacqueline’s 2026 watercolours printed onto vinyl and installed across the gallery walls.

The two artists are close friends and have much in common - in their life stories as well as their art. Poncelet’s work is widely associated with pattern, and Milroy’s with still life.

That experience is communicated powerfully, and mostly indirectly, through art-making rather than as literal subject matter. For instance, whilst ‘family’ has as great importance to both artists as it does to anyone else, there are no images here of mothers or fathers, children or siblings. The significant decisions in life - and so our experiences, despite their complexity - are often conceptualised based on dualities: yes/no, either/or, sometimes both/and. by @jacponcelet

“Marks repeat, creating pattern and structure. They mirror each other, mirror the total structure of the image they create and exist in, and mirror the world beyond the image’s border. Sometimes the process is less poetic, more matter-of-fact, than this implies. Sometimes rhythms are rough and ready, elsewhere worked out with a miniaturist’s precision. Gesture plays a large, perhaps over-sized role in current abstract painting. The nine artists in 'Mirror City' employ, subvert or deny gesture with control and discipline, searching after meaning and pictorial intensity with definite, if not predictable purpose.”

I am so happy to be helping to support the Whitechapel Art Gallery in their 125 year.

I had an exhibition in The (brand) New Gallery in 1985. The show was of my ceramics. It would be the last time I would work solely in clay, so it marks a turning point in my life as an artist.

125 Anniversary Auction @whitechapelgallery

27 artworks by leading modern and contemporary artists – each of whom has had a pivotal exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery – alongside a selection of exclusive artist-led experiences. All proceeds will support the Gallery’s exhibitions, commissions, participation initiatives and public programmes.
