In 2005 I danced my first lead role as Clara in β€œThe Nutcracker” 🩰 It was a dream role and I was thrilled beyond belief. The woman in the photograph with me was the ballet mistress and one of the brilliant women who coached me through the acting, bringing my dancing to the next level. She left a lasting impact on my life with her kindness and talent. Before our final dress rehearsal, she found me in the wings on the verge of tears. She checked in with me without judgment and stayed with me as I calmed down. I had received some tough notes the night before and was worrying I wouldn’t be able to apply them all and everyone would think I hadn’t tried/practiced. She listened and then asked if she could help somehow (even though she already had!) and graciously ran through a section of my solo with me. She reminded me that she believed in me and knew it’d play Clara brilliantly. That reminder that she thought I could do it meant the world to me. It still does. I know she didn’t have to share the extra tips or run throughs but it helped. I may not remember exactly what she said, but I do remember how she made me feel. That’s the kind of educator I strive to be. If it doesn’t feel like this, I don’t want it! βœ¨πŸŽ‰ πŸ’ This may seem strange coming from the woman who’s so in love with her husband and had the most fun planning a wedding, BUT for a long time I did NOT think I was getting married. #childofdivorce Truly I thought weddings were silly and only a part of fairytales. Love wasn’t always easy and sometimes I had to fight really hard for it. Thankfully I don’t have to do that today.
