Otter 2026 (Retto edition): Take all your expectations, your race plan, all the training stats and whatever Claude told you is possible, bundle it up, throw it into the ocean and just try to enjoy it.

Flip this race and route is something special making me realize once again what a privilege it is to be able to experience these places.

Super excited and amazed by the calibre that South African trail runners are reaching. Getting more competitive every year.

Quick race recap: Went out a bit too hard at the start, went through a low patch after Oakhurst, recovered somewhat but not quick enough. Lessons learned.

@jacques.buys returns with an Otter TERREX Trail, presented by EasyEquities,PB of 04:24:39, which he set in 2024 earning him a 2nd place at the time. With three Otter TERREX Trails under his belt now, he knows what it takes to put on a show.

He warns first-timers to look out for the technical boulder fields And to start conservatively as the really difficult section catches you at the end.

After finishing 2nd in last years MUT60 @jacques.buys climbs up one more step on the podium this year to take gold 🏆

Behind him it was a stampede to the line with @simondesvauxdemarigny and @joshblackshaw7 laying it all out on the course but eventually finishing hand in hand for a tied 2nd place.

The other notable performance was @rebeccakohne coming in 5th overall 🥵

It’s safe to say that the MUT60 provided all the drama, emotions and joy that has become the hallmark of the MUT by UTMB 👏

They don’t call it “The Beast” for nothing. The Upper Highway Trail Marathon isn’t just a race; it’s a 42km rite of passage.

This is where legends are forged. We take you deep into the breathtaking, raw heart of the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve—down into its soul-stirring depths. But the real journey begins when you look up… and face the monumental climb back out. This is 42km of relentless, gruelling, and breathtakingly beautiful trail that pushes you to your absolute limit.

💬 Veteran runners have called it:
✅ “BRUTAL.”
✅ “Tougher than Comrades.”
✅ The defining challenge of their running careers.

Why do they come back? For the sheer, unadulterated elation at the finish line at Camp Orchards. For the right to earn “THE CAP.” More than just finisher’s gear, this cap is a symbol of resilience, a badge of honour worn by those who have conquered The Beast. It sits on the bucket list of many serious trail runners, and we were lucky to have Jacques Buys and Tamara Rebman take the titles this year.

Otter 2025
A bit more painful than anticipated.

An attempt to dig a rock out of the ground with my quad in the early part of the race had me going a bit slower than I would have liked. This made the finish line even more rewarding. A proper internal fight as always on this special trail.

The initial contusion turned out to be a hematoma. Still can't walk properly, so unfortunately, I won't be toeing the start line at @capetowntrailmarathon this year. taken in Nature's Valley, South Africa by @jacques.buys
