In Dolly We Trust. What started off as an a simple idea and outline and was going to take maybe a few hours to do, slowly (with the forever present eye of my Virgo husband/designer) morf’d into this. I couldn’t even tell you how many hours it took me to do, but here she is… on the “Dolly wall” at The Desert 5 Spot for all the world to see. 23 years ago, at the guidance of my dad, I wrote down a list of exactly what I wanted in a life partner.

My dad had always told me this was the secret to finding your person. He said the more random and specific you got, the better — and whatever you do, don’t forget to write down that they’re loyal, honest and faithful.

So I did.

My list looked something like this:

From Manchester, England
(I was obsessed with all things English and specifically English football)

Between 5’10” and 6’2”
(Jon is 5’11”)

Brown hair and blue or green eyes
(Jon: brunette, blue eyes)

Loves a beer at 3 o’clock in the afternoon
(Maybe I should have put a limit on this one)

Is a one-woman kind of man
(I always loved the way Paul Newman loved his wife)

Loyal, honest, kind and funny

Completely in love with me and wants to spend all his time with me

Always has my back, no matter what — and will scorch the earth for anyone who hurts my heart

Wants to build a life and a career with me from scratch

And the list went on and on.

When I eventually met Jon and he came to visit me in LA, we found the list. He was convinced I’d written it about him after we met.

But I hadn’t.

I’d just been waiting for him.

And now we’ve spent almost half our lives together. We’ve built businesses, changed directions, made money, lost money, traveled, laughed, fought, figured things out and started over more times than I can count.

And through every version of our life, the one thing I know is that no matter what happens, where we end up or what we have — all I really need is you.

I’m so happy we found each other again. I’m convinced we’ve already had so many lifetimes together, in all different shapes and sizes, and somehow we keep finding our way back to each other.

Happy birthday to my Manc husband.
