Jan found me around april of 2024. when i went to buy a film camera, i thought i was buying a digital camera. i don’t know how i thought this, but it goes to show that i knew nothing about what i was getting into.

As i walked over to checkout for Jan, the Bay Camera man asked me about purchasing film.

Jan is a beautiful Olympus Stylus film camera, alluring to me because she’s fit for all weather and seasons. When i was asked about buying film for Jan, i had no idea what he was talking about. I was embarrassed all of a sudden to be a buying a camera completely different from what i had been anticipating. i bought the first film behind the counter he said would work and left.

I returned with Jan a couple weeks later, my first roll of film all used up on photos of the coats, of friends, of a lot a don’t remember because i never saw it. the Bay Camera man asked me if i had heard a whirring sound that indicated all photos in the roll had been used. in that moment, i opened the back of the camera, exposing all of the film. the Bay Camera man informed me all the film had been ruined.

Jan has gone through several different kinds of film, flown to Boston, had road trips to Florida, sat at dinner tables, and fallen off many, many countertops…

Jan has some issues from my unfortunate mishandling & occasional dropping, and i’m worried she might only have a few rolls of film left.

This long winded message is a bit of a love letter to Jan.

Jan made me discover my love for physical media. sometimes i go a little crazy with the existential dread of never owning anything, living mostly on reoccurring subscriptions that exist in a data cloud. i’ve been able to learn a lot from Jan about taking photos that i wouldn’t have on my phone. Jan has really annoyed me, but we always got through it without being too negative. some days, Jan is my excuse to get out of the house & spend time with friends or in a place i’ve never been to. Jan has made me much too sentimental, but it’s always a pleasure having her at my side. by @jadabitttch
