"The end of the world",
Sagres' location dictated what many would believe it to be, the end of the world. The small settlement sits at Europe's most southwesterly point. In the ancient world, it was the last explored point. For this reason the Romans called Sagres the Promontorium Sacrum, otherwise the end of the world.

Igualada Cemetery by Enric Miralles & Carme Pinós

Located in Igualada, Catalonia, Spain, the cemetery was built between 1985 and 1994 and is one of the most striking works of Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós.

Here, concrete becomes a canvas for light and shadow. Strong geometric forms, deep recesses, narrow openings and changing levels create a constantly shifting play of light throughout the spaces.

The raw concrete surfaces absorb and reflect the light differently, producing sharp contrasts between illuminated areas and deep shadows.
Rather than relying on ornament, the architecture creates its atmosphere through geometry, material, light and darkness.

A place where light becomes part of the architecture and where every shadow changes the way the space is perceived.

The forgotten synagogue of Aley

When the Beirut-Damascus railway opened in 1895, Beirut's Jewish families began escaping the summer heat in the mountain town of Aley. Ezra Anzarut, a philanthropist known as "Ezra el Kebir" (the Great), built a synagogue and named it Ohel Yaakob, "Tent of Jacob," after his father.

It was more than a place of prayer. It helped fund a society that provided health care for the poor, and until Beirut's Magen Abraham Synagogue was founded in 1926, it was the community's main philanthropic center.

The Lebanese civil war left the building badly damaged, and only its walls survived. Today it stands as a quiet reminder of Lebanon's once-vibrant Jewish community.

(The construction date varies by source (1885 to 1895), so I went with the 1895 date given by the Aley municipality)

The Bhamdoun Synagogue, completed in 1922, is one of Lebanon's most significant yet overlooked Jewish heritage landmarks. Built to serve Beirut's Jewish families who spent their summers in the mountain resort of Bhamdoun, it became one of the country's largest synagogues and was known as the "New Temple."

Despite the destruction that devastated much of Bhamdoun during the Lebanese Civil War, the synagogue remarkably survived, preserving architectural features such as its grand staircase, Hebrew tablets of the Ten Commandments, central bimah, and the Holy Ark niche.

Today, although abandoned and in a state of decay, it stands as a powerful reminder of Lebanon's once-diverse religious and cultural landscape and the vibrant Jewish community that once flourished in the country's mountain towns.

Hidden in the heart of Baadaran, the historic Jumblatt Serail is one of the village's most significant architectural landmarks.

Traditionally associated with Sheikh Ali Jumblatt, the palace dates back to the 18th century, when Baadaran became one of the early seats of the Jumblatt family in the Chouf.

With its massive stone walls, arches, courtyards and traditional Ottoman-era architectural elements, the complex reflects a period when palaces in Mount Lebanon were both residences and places of power.

Recent archaeological investigations have revealed earlier architectural remains beneath the Serail, potentially dating back as far as the 11th century, adding even more layers to an already remarkable piece of Lebanese heritage.

A Hidden Story of Coexistence

A few days ago, in Baadaran, Chouf, I discovered something I had never come across before: a cemetery where Christians and Druze rest side by side.

What fascinated me was the pyramid-shaped tombs, built in essentially the same design for both Druze and Christian burials.

A beautiful example of how different communities once shared traditions, space, heritage, and even the same architectural language.

👇

Update: After further research and discussion with @heritage_and_roots , I have revised the identification of the tomb shown in this post (Photo 1, 2, 3). The hexagram / Seal of Solomon should not be taken, by itself, as evidence that the tomb is Jewish. The symbol was also used in Ottoman Islamic and Christian contexts, and similar motifs can be found on Ottoman era buildings and monuments.

When I visited Baadaran, the local guide and people I spoke with identified the tomb as Jewish, which is why I originally referred to it as such. However, local accounts can sometimes be inaccurate.

The structure is understood to be a mausoleum belonging to an important Druze family. I have therefore removed the reference to it as a Jewish tomb from the post.

Dahr Al Baydar was once an important station on the historic Beirut - Damascus railway, inaugurated in 1895 during the Ottoman period.

At around 1,500 metres above sea level, it was the highest point of the line. Trains crossed this difficult mountain terrain through tunnels and snow galleries before continuing towards the Bekaa Valley and Damascus.

After the railway fell into disuse, much of its infrastructure disappeared. Many of the rails were reportedly dismantled and taken as scrap metal by the Syrian army during its military presence in Lebanon, leaving behind sections of track, tunnels, bridges and abandoned railway buildings.

Today, Dahr Al Baydar remains a haunting reminder of Lebanon’s forgotten railway heritage.

- The Unfinished Palace -
On a hill overlooking Jezzine stands the unfinished dream of Dr. Farid Serhal.
Begun in 1967, the palace was conceived not simply as a residence, but as a museum bringing together fragments of different civilizations, from the Islamic and Andalusian worlds to Ottoman, Indian, Byzantine and European traditions.
Stone, arches, stained glass, sculptures and intricate ornamentation come together in an extraordinary architectural collage. Serhal continued building and collecting for decades, but died in 1996 before his vision was completed.
Today, the palace remains suspended between dream and ruin, an unfinished monument to one man's fascination with architecture, art and the civilizations that shaped it.

Hidden behind the bustling souks of Tripoli, Hammam Al-Nouri is one of Lebanon's finest surviving examples of Mamluk architecture. Built in 1333 by the Mamluk governor Nur al-Din, the bathhouse once served as a vibrant social space where daily rituals met timeless craftsmanship.

Beneath its iconic domes pierced with star-shaped skylights that fill the interiors with soft natural light stone, marble, arches, and flowing water create an atmosphere of remarkable serenity.

After decades of closure, Hammam Al-Nouri has been restored, preserving its architectural character and bringing renewed attention to one of Tripoli’s most remarkable historic landmarks.
