NAH this really is Business & Personal ! Graduating undergrad from Norfolk State University (2018) and suffering from post-grad depression, becoming a Dental assistant (2019), COVID stopped the world and being diagnosed with Systemic Lupus (2020), having a baby at 30 weeks with a extended NICU stay (2021), 3 DAT attempts (2020, 2023, 2024), multiple application cycles (2024,2025), having another baby the first month of my Master’s of Health Sciences program (2025) was all worth it if it meant I’ll be a Dentist in 2030. With the cards I been dealt, many would’ve been gave up a long time ago but God strengthens me. I understand the great privilege I have in being a mother who is able to ferociously pursue my professional goals. It is my hope that not only I inspire my two kids, but also continue to inspire moms and people in general to just keep going. Slow motion is better than no motion and I’m gonna keep going step by step until it’s Dr. Smile Artis 🦷. I am honored to be triple HBCU educated and join the great legacy of Doctors that have came before me at the historic Meharry Medical College — the first Medical school for Black people in the South. This journey from Pre-Dental to rising Student Doctor has been hard but not achieving my goal would’ve been even harder, so I chose my hard. Cheers to if you don’t make it in your 20s, because that opens the doors for you to make it in your 30s.My path may not be linear but I have slowly moved into this direction with the intentions of having DDS behind my name and Dr. in front of it. I am so grateful for every single person that has been apart of my journey from my family/friends, dental mentors, coworkers, and a special shout out to the dental baddies at my first ever dental job who trained me into the assistant I became. Becoming a dentist used to be solely for me but a huge motivating factor is that I aspire to be a mother my sons can brag about. Despite being diagnosed with Lupus, becoming a mother, and battling imposter syndrome for many, many years i finally can say I got accepted into dental school. I pray all the time that God uses me as a vessel to be a testament of resilience. So we are just witnessing His great work. Jadia S. Artis, MHSMuva Mastered It with Honors and on the Dean’s list both semesters 🎓As always I want to thank God for the goodness He bestows upon me. I pray constantly my life is evidence that He is real. I am nothing without Him 🙏🏽Secondly, give me my flowers because I earned every single petal💐. I started this accelerated Master’s program to become a more competitive applicant while 8 months pregnant with a 4 year old toddler after being denied from dental schools. I developed Pre-Eclampsia (again) one month into my program, and had a scheduled C-section procedure during my first round of exams. My blood pressure was so high I had to be on a Magnesium IV drip so I wouldn’t seize out. I stayed in the hospital for longer than usual and was released on blood pressure medication. No days off! I was in the hospital studying despite it all. I didn’t take a break (even though it was extended to me) because I felt like if I fell behind it would be harder to catch back up. I pumped breast milk, studied, ate, and slept around the clock. Beyond thankful for my retired grandparents who allowed me to move in during post-partum and watched the kids so I could focus on school. I truly could not have achieved this without my entire village and I understand how incredible of a privilege it is to have one. Lastly, I dedicate this degree to my kids. Often times society acts like when you become a mom you have to put your dreams on hold. One day they will have it all because they saw their mommy walking her goals down. Now that my degree is conferred, my sons can officially check Master’s degree or higher off of Mommy’s education level. I’m even more happy to say I’m a Double HBCU grad (and we working on 3x). Me being educated is important to me for my bloodline — past, present and future.
