TBT – 13 years ago

Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦

The night I became the welterweight world champion at @efcworldwide

I stepped in as the underdog, fighting two weight classes above my natural division — a challenge that pushed me to another level.

That fight became the first title bout ever broadcast across the entire African continent.

First foreign fighter to win a title in the organization.
At the time, the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt living in Africa.

Looking back, it was more than just a win.

I had the honor of representing Brazil on a different stage and being part of something bigger than myself.

Some moments don’t just change your life — they shape your path. 🇧🇷

TBT to an unforgettable night at EFC Africa.

That was the night I earned my second consecutive Submission of the Night bonus. Across from me was an opponent considered, at the time, to have the best Jiu-Jitsu in the region, with five straight submission wins on his record.

Brynlee had an amazing performance this past weekend. She was a little nervous at first about competing in a different bracket, against older and heavier opponents, but she overcame it and hit a beautiful balloon sweep, followed by a unique armbar variation she developed herself. She has been submitting her opponents with this technique for some time now—trapping the arm against her waist to finish the submission.

Daniel had a great performance this weekend! Even under pressure from his opponent, he stayed composed, took the back, and finished with a beautiful rear-naked choke.

Jiu-Jitsu teaches us how to stay calm and become comfortable with the uncomfortable It’s one of the most valuable lessons a child can learn to help face life’s challenges—both on and off the mats.

Today was a day of competition, growth, and so much pride! Our kids team took first place overall once again, with incredible performances and some amazing submissions.

The medals are a great achievement, but they’re only one part of the story. What matters most to me is the hard work, dedication, and courage each student brings to the mats—doing their best, respecting their limits, and continuing to grow.

I’m proud of every student who stepped onto the mats today. The effort they put in and the progress they continue to make are what this is all about.

🥋 EXPERIENCE MATTERS. ESPECIALLY WHEN TEACHING THE NEXT GENERATION.

When choosing a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy for your child, experience matters.

At @unity.jiu.jitsu_grandrapids , our Head Coach brings over 30 years dedicated to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, 25 years of international teaching experience, and more than 10 years teaching children right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Teaching children requires more than technical knowledge. It takes patience, responsibility, discipline, and the experience to understand each student’s individual development.

Our commitment goes beyond teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques. We focus on providing a structured, respectful, and supportive environment where children can develop confidence, discipline, and strong character.

Because who teaches your child is just as important as what they learn.

TBT — JAPAN, 2004 🇧🇷🇯🇵 | A Dream They Said Was Impossible

In the early 2000s, PRIDE was the biggest MMA organization in the world—but it didn’t have a lightweight division. I was a young Brazilian fighter, a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu ( under @renatotavares1 ) with only a few professional fights, dreaming of competing there while people told me I would have to gain weight and move up several divisions.

I refused to let that stop me.

I left my academy and students behind and moved to another city to earn a place at Chute Boxe, one of the most feared MMA teams in the world.

I arrived with no money, no home of my own, and sometimes not enough to eat. I stayed with a friend and even went to restaurants asking for food. Training was brutal. After more than a month of punishing sparring—and relying on painkillers to deal with the soreness—I finally earned my place on the team.

After my first fight for Chute Boxe, I was able to support myself. Then, following three straight victories, I was selected to represent Brazil against Takanori Gomi, who would later become PRIDE’s legendary lightweight champion.

In February 2004, at just 23 years old, I boarded an airplane for the first time. My destination was Japan and PRIDE Bushido 2.

I competed in a three-on-three Brazil vs. Japan showdown alongside Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. I lost to Gomi, but Brazil won the team battle.

This photo of Wanderlei and me was published in the Japanese newspaper The Naigai Times, capturing a moment from one of the most unforgettable chapters of my life.

More than two decades later, I look back with pride—not because I won that night, but because I had the courage to leave everything behind and chase a dream others said was impossible.

I made it to PRIDE. I stepped into that legendary ring. And I became part of its history.

🇧🇷🇯🇵
