Welcome to the OC, b*tch!

Spent a few gorgeous days in Laguna Beach that lined up with an October heatwave so we were able to squeeze the last drops out of summer ‘26. Jim was busy with work retreat activities so I spent most of the time as a solo tourist, scouting the best food and sights to share with him during the evening off-hours.

Had a great mini book tour through Southern Illinois this past week. It was really great to read from and talk about my books in the place where they're set. Thanks to Southeastern Illinois College and Galatia Public Library for setting up really great events. And special thanks to everyone who came out and were such an engaged audience. You all made this special. taken in Saline County by @jagill_writer

UPCOMING EVENTS in October for Carbon City, 1925 you should put on your calendars. Southern Illinois friends, I'll be around on October 1st doing readings and talking about the writing process and answering questions. First I'll be at Southeastern Illinois College at 1pm for an SI Storytellers event. Then that evening at 5pm, I'll be in my hometown at the Galatia Public Library. And for everyone far and wide, I'll be doing a reading via Zoom as part of the Southern Illinois University fall literary festival. I hope to see you virtually and in person! by @jagill_writer

I was thrilled to see that my novel Carbon City, 1925 was featured in Publisher's Weekly June Indie Spotlight highlighting mysteries and thrillers.

Here's the full author statement I submitted, which they edited for space.

AUTHOR STATEMENT: "I grew up in the setting of Carbon City, 1925, hearing stories about the Klan wars and the mine massacres and the gangsters who operated with impunity. I saw the bullet holes in the brick faces of the Masonic hall and hospital, where shootings had taken place. Had been to the cemetery where S. Glenn Young is buried and where the final act of the mine massacre took place. Had driven past the spot on the old highway where Charlie Birger's Shady Rest had once stood. I've always known I wanted to write about this history, but I also knew I didn't just want to retell the story that had already been told in other books. It wasn't until I created my fictional characters and their stories to inhabit this historical world that Carbon City, 1925 started to take shape. I wrote the entire first draft of two different manual typewriters -- a 1930s Royal portable and a 1960s Remington -- and then made hand edits to that manuscript before typing everything into the computer for further development. And I spent over ten years researching the time period, so that even the smallest details create a rich backdrop over which my story can unfold."

3 Days of live music + Minnesota summer on the Mississippi = a good time had by all. There were a ton of bands to see, but these were our faves. Minnesota Yacht Club lineup taken in Harriet Island Regional Park by @jagill_writer
