There is no expiration date on the love between a grandfather and his first grandchild.
Sometimes it’s hard to have difficult conversations with your elder about the afterlife. Thank you for teaching me to speak up for myself, forcing me to have difficult conversations that would prepare me for days like today. In 2021, “I said, ‘Daddy, you’ll outlive me; we don’t need to talk about this stuff.’” Now here we are. I hope I made you proud. Matthew 6:33: Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need. “It’ll be all over in the morning.” (Our Song)
This is the most important lesson you’ve ever taught me. (This is our thing). You were born in a time when men talked less and worked more. I have literally watched you work at Texas/Huntsman Chemical Plant, sometimes triple shifts, seven days a week, to provide! That one engineering job took care of your village and gave me 26 years of the best insurance in the world, especially dental! Praise His name 🙌🏾. Multiple back surgeries due to working so hard couldn’t keep you from your career. You retired and went back, still working to provide for your family, children, and grandchildren until they made you retire. I’ve never met a man to this day who worked so hard. Thank you for instilling this work ethic in me, even though my generation has learned the value of hard work, just in a little less hard but smarter way. I knew engineer wasn’t for me. Daddy, you are the perfect example of how to lead and not follow. I love you and you’ll truly be missed.

I’m so glad that we got to celebrate your birthday in December. I was determined to celebrate you, because of the man you are. I can’t wait to tell the story and meaning of this song. This is our song daddy! 💙💪🏾 I get it now! Thank you, Tommie Deal Jr., Daddy, Grandpa! 💙 I hope I did exactly what you wanted and made you proud! A few weeks back while I was at your bedside, this song came on “Rest Beyond The River” and I was about to change it and you tap my hand and said, “did you hear that?” I said no grandpa what was it?” With no response at that moment this song continued to play, and listened. 🙏🏽🥹

My mom told me a story about how you wanted my name to start with a J, since your name and my dad’s name start with J’s. That was significant to you. J’s not to be Jr’s, but to have our own identity but start with J. I’m glad she honored your wish (Johnnie, James, & Jama’).

The bond between a grandfather and his first grandchild is truly special. It’s as if the love and wisdom that’s accumulated over the years can be passed on with a gentler, deeper understanding. With grandchildren, there’s a sense of second chances—time to offer patience, attention, and a different kind of love that maybe wasn’t always possible with their own children, perhaps because of the pressures and struggles of raising a family.
Grandparents often have the gift of time—time to savor moments, reflect on what worked and what didn’t, and approach things with a renewed perspective.

A few weekends ago, I had the privilege of celebrating my 25th high school reunion with my classmates, friends, and most of all family.

The theme? Met Gala.

Let me tell you, we had an unforgettable time! There’s nowhere else I could imagine growing up than Port Arthur, Texas. We are truly the capital of class reunions—nobody does it better!

It felt incredible to be back home, surrounded by my original crew. I wouldn’t be who I am today without these roots.
