At the age of 3, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune called Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM). JDM impacts about 3 in 1 million children annually, and I was one these children. I was fortunate enough to receive an early diagnosis, which allowed me to keep all my abilities, as many children with this disease lose the ability to walk, talk, and eat.

With this illness came many doctor’s appointments and many stays in the hospital. From a young age, everyone knew that I was going to be a nurse. The interest I took in my diagnosis and the new environment around me never went unnoticed, and I quickly knew I wanted to be a nurse as soon as I knew what a job was.

This is more than just a career, it’s a lifelong passion that started when I was a young child in a hospital bed, dreaming of one day making a difference. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to care for my community and advocate for those who need it most. I’m proud to share that I will be continuing my journey as a Hematology/Oncology nurse 🩺 taken in University of Wisconsin Milwaukee by @jaida.bender
